Getting Your Dewormers Right for Your Livestock

One of the biggest mistakes farmers make is using the same dewormer repeatedly. While it may seem to work initially, parasites can gradually develop resistance, making that dewormer less effective over time.

To keep your worm control program effective, alternate the class of dewormers you use. Rotating between different active ingredients helps reduce the development of resistant worms and keeps your animals healthier.

Here are some of the common classes of dewormers:

• Albendazole – Effective against roundworms, lungworms, tapeworms, and adult liver flukes. It is commonly used for routine deworming in cattle, sheep, and goats.

• Levamisole – Highly effective against roundworms and lungworms. It acts quickly but should be dosed accurately because overdosing can be toxic.

• Ivermectin – Controls internal parasites such as roundworms and lungworms, while also treating external parasites including ticks, lice, mites, and some flies.

A few important tips:
✔ Rotate between different classes of dewormers not just different brand names.
✔ Dose according to the animal's body weight. Underdosing encourages resistance.
✔ Avoid deworming the entire herd unnecessarily. Treat based on need and veterinary advice.
✔ Combine deworming with good pasture management and proper nutrition for the best results.

Remember, a dewormer is a valuable tool, but using it correctly is what keeps it effective for years to come.
