From Chicks to Market: What It Really Costs to Feed Broiler Chickens and Village Chickens (Updated 28 April 2025)

Raising broiler chickens and village chickens can be a good business, but only if you understand your costs, especially feed. Feed is the single biggest expense in poultry farming. Many farmers focus on chick prices, housing, or vaccines, but forget to plan properly for feed. Without enough feed, your birds will not reach the right weight, and you will not make a profit.

This guide will help you understand how much feed your broilers and village chickens need, how much it will cost, and how to plan smartly to avoid losses.

How much feed does one broiler chick need?

On average, one broiler chick needs about 3.1 to 4 kilograms of feed to grow from day-old to market weight in 6 weeks. A typical feed bag weighs 50 kilograms, which means:

One bag feeds about 12 to 13 chicks

Feed requirements by group size:

50 chicks = 4 bags
100 chicks = 8 bags
200 chicks = 16 bags
500 chicks = 40 bags
1000 chicks = 80 bags

Feed types and updated prices in 2025

Broiler feed is given in three stages: starter, grower, and finisher. According to the updated Nutri Feeds Lusaka price list effective from 13 January 2025, the prices per 50kg bag are:

Starter (0 to 13 days): K820.00
Grower (14 to 27 days): K780.00
Finisher (28 days to slaughter): K760.00

Recommended feed per broiler bird:

Starter: 0.6 kg
Grower: 1.25 kg
Finisher: 1.25 kg
Total: 3.1 kg per bird in 6 weeks

Feed cost per broiler bird:

Starter: (0.6 ÷ 50) × 820 = K9.84
Grower: (1.25 ÷ 50) × 780 = K19.50
Finisher: (1.25 ÷ 50) × 760 = K19.00
Total feed cost per broiler bird: K48.34

Total feed cost by flock size (broilers):

50 chicks = K2,417
100 chicks = K4,834
200 chicks = K9,668
500 chicks = K24,170
1000 chicks = K48,340

USES OF MORINGA PLANT AND HOW TO USE IT IN POULTRY FARMING.

The Moringa plant, also known as the drumstick tree, is a highly nutritious plant that can be used in various ways in poultry farming. Here are some of its uses and how to use it:

Feed supplement: Moringa leaves are rich in essential nutrients, including protein, vitamins, and minerals, that are beneficial to poultry health and productivity. You can dry the leaves and grind them into a powder, which can then be added to your poultry feed to supplement their nutrition.

Immune booster: Moringa leaves contain natural antioxidants, which help boost the immune system of poultry birds, making them more resistant to diseases and infections.

Antibacterial agent: Moringa leaves contain antibacterial compounds that can help prevent and control bacterial infections in poultry. Adding moringa powder to the feed can help reduce the incidence of diseases such as coccidiosis and salmonellosis.

Growth promoter: Moringa leaves also contain growth-promoting compounds, which can help improve the growth rate and weight gain of poultry birds, making them more marketable.

To use moringa in poultry farming, you can follow these steps:

Harvest fresh moringa leaves and wash them thoroughly.

Dry the leaves in the shade until they are dry and crisp.

Grind the dried leaves into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or a grinder.

Mix the moringa powder into your poultry feed, at a ratio of 2-5% of the total feed, depending on the age and weight of the birds.

Store the moringa powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight.
