A strong herbal mixture is not a replacement for a poultry vaccination programme.

Herbs or other supportive products may have a place in flock management, but vaccines are specifically designed to stimulate an immune response against particular diseases. Poultry vaccination programmes are built around the diseases relevant to the flock, location, and production system.

That distinction matters.

If you replace vaccination with a homemade herbal mixture, you may be removing a disease-specific prevention tool without actually replacing its function.

Good poultry health is not about choosing herbs OR vaccines.

It is about using the right tools for the right purpose:

Vaccination for disease-specific protection.

Biosecurity to reduce disease introduction and spread.

Good nutrition and management to support flock health.

Don't confuse supportive care with specific disease prevention.

🐥 YOUR NEW CHICKS SHOULD NOT ARRIVE TO AN EMPTY DRINKER

One simple brooding mistake is preparing the heat, litter, and feeders but leaving the water for later.

When chicks arrive, clean water should already be available in the brooding area. Extension guidance identifies water as one of the first things chicks need on arrival and recommends continuous access to clean water.

So prepare your drinkers before the chicks arrive.

Check that:
✔️ The drinkers are clean.
✔️ Fresh water is available.
✔️ The drinkers are easy for the chicks to find.
✔️ There is enough watering access for the flock.

Don't make water an afterthought.

Good brooding starts before the chicks arrive.

And then comes daily management.

Ask, “Can I manage the factors that determine the result?”

🎄 STOCKING BROILERS FOR CHRISTMAS? DON'T WAIT UNTIL DECEMBER TO PLAN

If Christmas is your target market, your planning should start well before the birds arrive.

Work backwards from your intended selling date and think through:

🐔 When should the chicks arrive?
🌾 How much feed will the flock require?
💉 What vaccination programme is appropriate for your location and vaccine products?
🔥 Is your brooding setup ready?
💧 Will clean water be available consistently?
🛡️ Is your biosecurity plan in place?
💰 Have you budgeted for feed, vaccines, litter, heating, labour, mortality, and other costs?

Don't blindly copy another farmer's vaccination schedule or feeding quantities. Programmes should fit your birds, products, local disease situation, and management system.

Christmas demand can create an opportunity, but good results start with preparation.

Plan the flock before you stock the flock.

POULTRY FARMING IS NOT EASY MONEY 🐔

Poultry farming can be profitable, but profit is not automatic.

Your results can be affected by chick quality, feed efficiency, water, housing, biosecurity, disease prevention, mortality, market prices, and the quality of your daily management.

And when you're keeping hundreds of birds, a small management mistake can become an expensive one.

That is why I don't recommend entering poultry farming with the mindset of quick money.

Enter with a plan.

Keep proper records.
Know your costs.
Monitor your birds.
Manage your feed and water well.
Plan for disease prevention and market conditions.
And be patient.

The real shortcut in poultry farming is learning how to manage the basics consistently.

Recurring flock problems deserve a wider inspection.

Look around the birds: 💧 Water
🪶 Litter
🌬️ Ventilation
📏 Stocking density
🌾 Feed storage
🛡️ Biosecurity

Medication may be appropriate, but repeatedly treating birds without investigating the underlying risk factors can miss the bigger picture.

Good poultry health starts with good management.

YOUR BIRDS CAN LOOK HEALTHY AND YOUR FARM CAN STILL BE LOSING MONEY

Not every performance problem comes with obvious signs of disease.
Poor ventilation, overcrowding, water problems, feed wastage, inconsistent feeding, temperature problems, wet litter, and weak biosecurity can all create management challenges that affect flock performance.
And there is another problem: poor records can make it difficult to know when performance starts changing.
So before reaching for medication, check the basics:
Water. Feed. Air. Temperature. Litter. Space. Records.
This doesn't mean every poor-performing flock has a management problem. It means good investigation should come before assumptions.
Healthy-looking birds are not enough. You also need to know whether the flock is performing efficiently.
