CAN TURKEY POULTS AND BROILER CHICKS SHARE THE SAME BROODER?

🚨 THEY CAN SHARE A BROODER, BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN THEY SHOULD.

Turkey poults and broiler chicks may have broadly similar early brooding requirements, so mixed brooding can be physically possible under appropriate conditions.

But the bigger issue is DISEASE RISK.

Chickens can carry Histomonas meleagridis, the organism that causes blackhead disease, sometimes without obvious illness. Turkeys are much more vulnerable to severe disease.

The risk can also involve the cecal worm Heterakis gallinarum, contaminated soil, faeces, and contaminated equipment.

That is why separate brooding and rearing of turkeys and chickens is generally the safer management choice, especially where blackhead disease is a concern.

If you must brood them together, pay close attention to:

✅ Bird health and source
✅ Clean, dry litter
✅ Adequate brooder space
✅ Clean drinking water
✅ Easy access to appropriate feed
✅ Strict hygiene and biosecurity
✅ Preventing contact with contaminated soil or faeces

🐔 BEFORE YOU ASSUME YOUR BROILERS ARE FINE, CHECK THESE 10 THINGS FIRST!

Poultry farming isn't a “set it and forget it” business.

Sometimes, a flock can look fine while small problems are already developing. That's why taking a few minutes to observe your birds every day, especially during brooding, can make a big difference.
Before you leave the poultry house each morning, check these 10 things:

1️⃣ ARE THE BIRDS ACTIVE?
Healthy chicks should generally be alert and responsive. If you notice unusual inactivity, isolation, or excessive huddling, take a closer look.

2️⃣ IS THE BROODING ENVIRONMENT RIGHT?
Don't depend on the thermometer alone. Check the temperature, humidity, and how the chicks are behaving. Excessive huddling or panting can indicate that something isn't right.

3️⃣ IS THERE ENOUGH FEED?
Make sure there is enough feed and that every bird can easily reach the feeders.

4️⃣ IS THE WATER CLEAN AND FRESH?
Clean water should always be available. Check the water supply every day because changes in water intake can sometimes signal a management or health problem.

5️⃣ ARE THE DRINKERS CLEAN AND WORKING?
Dirty or poorly adjusted drinkers can restrict water access and contribute to wet litter.

6️⃣ IS THE LITTER DRY?
Wet litter can increase ammonia and create poor conditions for the flock. Check for leaking drinkers and other sources of moisture.

7️⃣ DO ANY BIRDS LOOK UNUSUAL?
Watch for reduced activity, poor appetite, unusual droppings, coughing, respiratory changes, or birds separating themselves from the flock. These signs can have different causes, so don't jump to a diagnosis. Investigate and seek professional advice when necessary.

8️⃣ HAVE DEAD BIRDS BEEN REMOVED?
Remove mortalities promptly and dispose of them properly according to your farm's biosecurity procedures.

9️⃣ IS THE VENTILATION GOOD?
Proper ventilation helps control moisture, ammonia, and stale air while keeping the environment comfortable for the birds.

🔟 ARE FEED AND WATER INTAKE NORMAL?

YOUR BROILERS MAY NOT BE GROWING POORLY BECAUSE OF THE FEED.

Before you change your feed brand again, check your management.

Feed quality absolutely matters. Broilers need a properly formulated diet with the right balance of energy, amino acids, minerals and vitamins.

But even good feed cannot deliver its full potential if the birds are poorly managed.

Consider a flock that is:

❌ Under heat or cold stress.
❌ Dealing with coccidiosis or another health problem.
❌ Exposed to wet, poorly managed litter.
❌ Drinking poor-quality or insufficient water.
❌ Competing excessively for feeder or drinker space.
❌ Kept in an environment with inadequate ventilation.

These factors can reduce feed intake, impair gut health, increase disease pressure and ultimately hurt growth and feed conversion.

So when broilers are not reaching their expected body weight, don't automatically blame the feed.

Check the entire production system.
Ask yourself:

Is the feed properly formulated and stored?
Are the birds eating enough?
Is clean water available at all times.
Is the brooding temperature appropriate?
Is the litter dry?
Is ventilation adequate?
Are stocking density and feeder space appropriate?
Are there signs of disease or poor gut health?

Good broiler performance is not about choosing between “feed” and “management.”
It is about getting BOTH right.

The goal is simple: convert quality feed into healthy body weight as efficiently as possible.

🐔 CHICKEN PRICES ARE DOWN. IS YOUR FCR LOW ENOUGH TO HELP CONTROL PRODUCTION COSTS?

When broiler prices drop, every farmer feels the pressure. You may be selling at the same market price as everyone else, so controlling your production costs becomes even more important.

One number worth watching closely is your Feed Conversion Ratio, or FCR.

For example, imagine two farms selling broilers at the same price. Farm A has an FCR of 1.50, while Farm B has an FCR of 1.70.

Under similar conditions, Farm A is using less feed to produce each kilogram of live weight. Since feed is usually one of the biggest expenses in broiler production, better feed efficiency can help reduce the feed cost of producing each kilogram of bird.

And when selling prices are falling, that difference can matter.

Good FCR doesn't happen by chance. It comes from consistent management:
