ECOWAS Plans to Launch a Single Currency for West African Countries 🌍 by 2027.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is working towards introducing a single regional currency called the ECO by 2027, in what could become one of the biggest economic integration projects in Africa.
The ECO is designed to serve as a common currency for ECOWAS member states, making cross-border trade, investment, and financial transactions easier across West Africa. However, the planned launch depends on participating countries meeting strict economic requirements, meaning the 2027 timeline is still a target rather than a guaranteed rollout.
The proposed currency aims to:
• Eliminate the need to exchange currencies when trading between ECOWAS countries.
• Boost regional trade and economic growth.
• Make travel, business, and investment easier across West Africa.
• Reduce transaction costs for businesses and individuals.
• Strengthen economic integration and create a more unified regional market.
The proposed currency will be used by the following 15 ECOWAS countries:
🇳🇬Nigeria, 🇬🇭 Ghana, 🇸🇳 Senegal, 🇨🇮 Côte d'Ivoire, 🇧🇯 Benin, 🇹🇬 Togo, 🇧🇫 Burkina Faso, 🇬🇳 Guinea, 🇬🇼 Guinea-Bissau, 🇱🇷 Liberia, 🇸🇱 Sierra Leone, 🇬🇲 The Gambia, 🇨🇻 Cabo Verde, 🇲🇱 Mali
🇳🇪 Niger.
ECOWAS has indicated that implementation may happen in phases, with countries joining as they satisfy agreed economic convergence criteria rather than all adopting the currency at the same time.
If implemented, the ECO will reduce the need to exchange different national currencies, lower transaction costs, boost regional trade, and strengthen economic cooperation across the region.
The proposed currency is expected to be adopted by ECOWAS member states that meet the required economic conditions, making the rollout a gradual process rather than an immediate change for every country.
