THE UNIVERSITY OF BEES

“A bee that keeps leaving one flower for another gathers little honey. Likewise, a person who is constantly distracted rarely achieves lasting success. Focus gives strength to effort, direction to dreams and value to time.”

WISDOM:
In the hive, bees work with remarkable concentration.

They are not distracted by every movement around them; they remain committed to their purpose. This discipline is what enables the colony to thrive.

Life is filled with distractions — unnecessary arguments, endless comparison, idle entertainment, fear, gossip and the pressure to follow every trend.

These things quietly consume time, energy and vision. A distracted mind often begins many things but finishes very little.

Focus requires intentional living. It means knowing what truly matters and giving it consistent attention.

Great achievements are rarely produced by scattered effort; they are built through patience, discipline and sustained concentration over time.

Just as bees return repeatedly to the flowers that produce nectar, wise people continually invest their energy into productive habits, meaningful goals and worthwhile relationships.

When you reduce distractions, your mind becomes clearer, your progress becomes steadier and your purpose becomes stronger.

Do not allow temporary noise to steal your permanent potential.

Stay focused, remain diligent and keep building your honey little by little.

HOW TO HANDLE BEES CALMLY WITHOUT STRESSING THEM

Many people think bees are naturally aggressive, but in reality, bees often react based on how they are handled.

Calm handling not only protects the beekeeper, it also keeps the colony healthy, productive and less defensive.

At ALAKE BEE FARM, we believe that good beekeeping is not about force — it is about understanding bee behaviour.

Here are practical ways to handle bees calmly without causing unnecessary stress:

1. Approach the Hive Calmly:
Avoid rushing, shouting or making sudden movements around the hive. Bees are sensitive to vibration, movement and disturbance. Walk gently and stay relaxed.

2. Use Smoke Properly — Not Excessively:
Smoke helps to calm bees, but too much smoke can irritate them. Use cool smoke sparingly at the hive entrance and under the lid. A few gentle puffs are enough.

3. Inspect at the Right Time:
The best time to inspect hives is during warm, dry weather when many forager bees are out working. Avoid opening hives during rain, cold weather or at night.

4. Wear Clean Protective Clothing:
Bees react strongly to strong odours such as sweat, perfume, alcohol and dirty bee suits.
Keep your protective wear clean and avoid harsh scents before handling bees.

5. Handle Frames/Bars Carefully:
Do not jerk, shake or squeeze frames/bars roughly. Slow and steady handling prevents crushing bees, which releases alarm pheromones and can make the colony defensive.

6. Avoid Blocking the Hive Entrance:
Standing directly in front of the hive can disturb returning foragers.
Work from the side or back whenever possible.

7. Understand Bee Mood:
Sometimes bees are naturally more defensive due to weather changes, predators, food scarcity or queen problems.
Learning bee behaviour helps you know when to continue or postpone inspections.

8. Stay Calm Even If Bees Become Defensive:
Panic causes more problems. Swatting bees or running wildly increases aggression. Move away calmly and allow the colony to settle.

Remember:
A calm beekeeper often has calm bees.

The more gently and wisely you handle bees, the easier your beekeeping journey becomes.

At ALAKE BEE FARM, we teach practical and responsible beekeeping that protects both humans and bees.

The University of Bees

“Great achievements rarely begin with loud applause. Just as a hive starts with a few determined bees and drops of nectar, a meaningful life is built through small, consistent beginnings. Never despise humble starts, for within them lies the seed of greatness.”

At The University of Bees, we learn that nature does not rush, yet it accomplishes remarkable things.

Bees do not produce honey in a single day.

They gather little by little, flower by flower, journey by journey.

What appears insignificant today may become something extraordinary tomorrow through patience, discipline and persistence.

Many people abandon their dreams because the beginning looks too small, too slow or too ordinary.

Yet every strong tree once existed as a tiny seed beneath the soil.

Every expert was once a beginner who made mistakes. Every successful venture once started with uncertainty.

Do not wait for perfect conditions before you begin. Start with the knowledge you have, the resources available and the strength you possess today.

Small daily improvements eventually become powerful results. A single positive step repeated consistently can transform an entire future.

Never mock your current stage in life. Your small beginning is not your final destination.

What matters most is your willingness to keep growing, learning and persevering.

Like the bees, remain faithful in little efforts, for sweetness is often produced from gradual labour.

HOW TO AVOID HONEY CONTAMINATION

Pure honey is one of nature’s finest gifts, but poor handling can easily contaminate it and reduce its quality, taste and market value.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced beekeeper, maintaining clean and safe honey should always be a top priority.

Here are practical ways to keep your honey clean, healthy and premium-quality:

1. Harvest Only Mature Honey:
Avoid harvesting unripe honey with high moisture content. Mature honey lasts longer and is less likely to ferment.

2. Use Clean Equipment:
Wash and properly dry honey extractors, buckets, knives, sieves and storage containers before use.
Dirty equipment introduces bacteria and unwanted particles.

3. Avoid Smoking Excessively During Harvest:
Too much smoke can alter the smell and taste of honey. Use smoke moderately and wisely.

4. Keep Bees, Dust And Insects Away During Processing:
Process honey in a clean environment. Cover containers properly to prevent contamination from flies, ants and dirt.

5. Never Use Rusty Or Chemical-contaminated Containers:
Always use food-grade plastic, stainless steel or properly sealed containers.
Some metals react with honey and reduce its quality.

6. Do Not Add Water To Honey:
Adding water encourages fermentation and spoils the honey naturally produced by the bees.

7. Filter Properly But Do Not Over-process:
Good filtering removes wax and debris while preserving the natural nutrients and goodness of honey.

8. Store Honey Correctly:
Keep honey in tightly sealed containers away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

Remember:
Customers may forget your words, but they will always remember the quality of your honey.

Pure honey builds trust, reputation and loyal buyers.

At ALAKE BEE FARM, we believe quality is not accidental — it is the result of proper beekeeping practices, cleanliness and integrity.

HAVE YOU SEEN WHERE THE WORKERS FIRED THE QUEEN?

The world of bees is quite different from human world.

There is always a little drama in the bee world.

Each bee hive has one queen bee and, her primary job is laying of eggs. At her fertile stage, she can lay up to one thousand (1,000) eggs per day.

It will interest you to know that she (the queen) is not the bossy type unlike the human world.

Worker bees decide when to replace her, mostly because of her declining egg-laying ability which is her primary duty.

When it is time for a new queen to emerge, the workers select a larva and feed it a special diet (royal jelly) to develop into a queen bee.

What an interesting world!

HIVE MANAGEMENT FOR OPTIMUM HONEY YIELD

Every beekeeper dreams of harvesting golden, high-quality honey, but the secret is not luck… it’s proper hive management.

If you want your bees to reward you, you must first take care of them the right way.

Here’s how to get the best out of your hive:

1. STRONG COLONY = MORE HONEY
A weak colony produces little or no honey.
✓ Ensure your hive has a healthy queen
✓ Check for brood (eggs, larvae, pupae)
✓ Support colony growth with good nutrition

No bees, no honey. Build strength first.

2. LOCATION MATTERS
Where your hive sits determines your harvest.
✓ Place hives where flowers are abundant
✓ Ensure access to clean water
✓ Avoid noisy or disturbed environments

Bees go where food is; position them wisely.

3. KEEP THE HIVE CLEAN & ORGANIZED
Dirty hives invite pests and diseases.
✓ Remove debris and dead bees
✓ Inspect for pests like ants and wax moths
✓ Maintain proper spacing of frames

A clean hive is a productive hive.

4. PROVIDE ENOUGH SPACE
Overcrowding reduces honey production.
✓ Add supers when the hive is getting full
✓ Prevent swarming by giving bees room

When bees feel cramped, they leave instead of producing.

5. INSPECT REGULARLY (BUT DON’T DISTURB TOO MUCH)
✓ Check hive every 7–10 days
✓ Look for signs of disease or stress
✓ Avoid excessive opening of the hive

Balance is key—monitor, don’t stress your bees.

6. ENSURE GOOD NECTAR FLOW
✓ Plant bee-friendly crops (sunflower, moringa, citrus)
✓ Avoid pesticide-heavy areas

More nectar = more honey in your jars.

7. PROTECT YOUR BEES
✓ Control predators (ants, lizards, termites)
✓ Provide shade during extreme heat
✓ Ensure proper hive ventilation

Healthy bees are productive bees.

FINAL WORD
Honey production is not magic—it’s management.

Treat your bees like partners and they will reward you with abundance.

At ALAKE BEE FARM, we don’t just keep bees… we build thriving colonies.

THE UNIVERSITY OF BEES

“Time lost may not be recovered, for the clock of life moves only forward. The bee does not waste the morning chasing yesterday’s nectar; it gathers wisely while the flowers still bloom. Every moment ignored is an opportunity surrendered, and every delay steals from the harvest of tomorrow.”

WISDOM:
One of the greatest lessons from the world of bees is the value of time.

Bees work with urgency, discipline and purpose because they understand that seasons change quickly.

A flower blooming today may wither tomorrow. In the same way, opportunities, strength and chances in life do not remain forever.

Many people believe they can always return later to pursue their dreams, repair relationships, learn valuable skills or correct harmful habits.

Yet time is unlike money or possessions — once spent, it cannot truly be regained. Lost wealth may be recovered, but lost hours become history.

This wisdom is not meant to create fear, but awareness.

✓ Use your present wisely.
✓ Speak kindly while you still can.
✓ Learn while your mind is active.
✓ Build while your energy remains. ✓ Forgive before bitterness grows old.

Start now, because procrastination quietly robs destiny.

Just as bees turn each passing moment into honey, wise people turn each day into purpose, growth and meaningful living.
