If you are a chicken farmer and you have 10 roosters/ cockerels when it's 2 hours before dawn, it's only ONE rooster that will crow then the rest will follow. The crowing is how the dominant rooster/alpha male establishes authority(known as the pecking order). It's suicidal for the other 9 non-dominant roosters/beta males to even dare crow first.
A rooster crows because it has an internal clock known as circadian rhythm that helps him anticipate sunrise. If the dominant rooster's internal clock is set a little bit early, he will stimulate other roosters to crow early too but that's also a signal of old age to the other roosters...a sign for the other roosters to challenge his authority for leadership. This can be achieved through pecking/fighting.The winner becomes the new leader while the loser becomes a beta male/subordinate male.
Hens can also crow in the absence of a rooster/cockerel.The crowing hen is the dominant female or alpha female.
