How did strawberries even get to Nigeria? 🍓
I’ve grown strawberries for years, but honestly, I never really stopped to ask myself this question.
How did this little fruit, which we now associate so much with Jos & the Plateau, get here in the first place?
There’s a story that Missionaries brought strawberry seeds to the Jos Plateau many years ago…..But the more I looked into it, the more I realised the story isn’t that straightforward at all .
We don’t actually have a clear record telling us exactly who brought the first Strawberries into Nigeria.
What we do know is that strawberries were already being grown around Jos during the colonial period,& the cool climate in Plateau state gave them a very good environment to grow & I find that quite interesting.
Something that may have arrived here many years ago has now become part of what Jos is known for. And today, we’re still planting, picking and eating them every year 😂🍓
But now I’m curious… what story have you heard about how Strawberries came to Nigeria?
