โœ… The future of RICE farming is happening now ! โœ…
RICE can now be grown in CROP ROTATION and in fields not set with gravity leveling.
How ? With Rivulis Irrigation T-TAPE micro-irrigation systems, enabling water savings, drop by drop ๐Ÿ’ง, fertigation with liquid fertilizers.
Now the third year in a row, we did rice installations with our partner Magos Irrigation Systems in Portugal, and this year again, many farmers came to see the results of the crop growth in the field.
Beyond water savings, rice grown with micro-irrigation provides good yields, and much less methane emissions (did you know that methane is more impacting climate change than carbon dioxide and for longer?).
Most important learning is that rice can now be introduced in normal crop rotation with tomatoes and corn in any fields, opening new revenues opportunities for the farmers.

Thanks to the Portugal team Nuno, Ivo, Javier and to our partner Magos.

RICE VARIETIES ๐ŸŒพ

There are numerous rice varieties cultivated worldwide, each suited to different climates, soils, and uses. Here are some common categories of rice varieties:

1. Long-Grain Rice

Basmati: Fragrant rice mainly grown in India and Pakistan. It is known for its long grains and distinct aroma.

Jasmine: Aromatic rice grown primarily in Thailand. It has a slightly sticky texture when cooked.

American Long-Grain: Non-aromatic and typically used in the U.S. for various dishes like Pilaf.

2. Medium-Grain Rice

Arborio: Popular in Italy, used for making risotto. It has a creamy texture when cooked.

Calrose: Widely used in the U.S., especially in California, for sushi and other Asian dishes.

Valencia Rice: Known for making paella, grown in Spain.

3. Short-Grain Rice

Sushi Rice: Sticky and slightly sweet, commonly used in Japanese cuisine.

Glutinous Rice: Also called sticky rice, used in Asian dishes for desserts and savory meals.

Koshihikari: A premium Japanese short-grain rice, known for its excellent flavor and texture.

4. Specialty Rice Varieties

Black Rice: Also called forbidden rice, it's high in antioxidants and has a nutty flavor.

Red Rice: Known for its reddish-brown hue, it contains more fiber and nutrients than white rice.

Wild Rice: Not technically rice. It's a grass seed, popular in North America.

5. Varieties Grown in Africa

NERICA (New Rice for Africa): Developed to improve yield and resilience in African climates. It's a crossbreed between African rice and Asian rice.

Pishori Rice: Grown mainly in Kenya, this fragrant rice is similar to Basmati.

Each of these rice varieties has specific uses in different culinary traditions, depending on their texture, aroma, and cooking properties.
