Physical Signs

Panting & Open-Mouth Breathing – Chickens try to cool down by rapidly breathing through their open beaks.

Wing Spreading – They hold wings away from their body to release heat.

Lethargy – Slow movement, sitting or lying down more than usual.

Reduced Feed Intake – They eat less to avoid producing body heat.

Flared Nostrils – Rapid breathing can make nostrils widen noticeably.

Behavioral Signs

Crowding Near Water – Broilers stay close to drinkers or wet areas.

Unusual Clustering – Often under shaded areas or away from sun.

Irritability or Restlessness – Some birds may peck or move erratically.

How to Spot Early Signs of Newcastle disease in Your Flock

Newcastle disease spreads fast in chickens, so noticing the early signs can help you act quickly and protect the rest of your birds.

1. Sudden Loss of Appetite

Chickens may stop eating or drink very little. They often look weak and quiet.

2. Breathing Problems

Early respiratory signs include:

Coughing

Sneezing

Gasping for air

Nasal discharge

3. Drop in Egg Production

Layers may suddenly lay fewer eggs, and some eggs may have thin or soft shells.

4. Greenish or Watery Droppings

Many infected birds produce green, watery diarrhea.

5. Depression and Weakness

Birds may sit in one place, look sleepy, and avoid moving with the flock.

6. Swelling Around Eyes or Head

Some chickens develop swollen eyes or face.

7. Nervous Signs (Later Stage)

If the disease progresses, birds may show:

Twisted neck (torticollis)

Paralysis of wings or legs

Circling or loss of balance

What To Do Immediately

Isolate sick birds from the flock.

Improve hygiene in the coop.

Vaccinate healthy birds if they are not vaccinated.

Limit visitors and movement between flocks.

Early detection is important because Newcastle disease can spread very quickly and cause high mortality in poultry. πŸ”βš οΈ
