How handling and Slaughter House Environment may Affect the Quality of Dressed Chicken.

Stress and Animal Welfare:
The handling process in the slaughterhouse can cause stress to the chickens. Stress can lead to a number of physiological changes, such as increased levels of stress hormones, which can negatively impact the quality of the meat. Additionally, poor handling practices can cause injuries or bruises to the chicken (torn flesh, blood clots, broken bones, etc), which can further affect its quality and appearance.

Hygiene and Sanitation:
The cleanliness and hygiene practices in the slaughterhouse environment are crucial for maintaining the quality and safety of the dressed chicken. If the facility is not properly sanitized or if there is cross-contamination, it can lead to bacterial growth and foodborne illnesses. Proper hygiene practices, including thorough cleaning, disinfection, and temperature control, help ensure the safety and quality of the meat.

Processing and Storage:
The methods used for processing and storage can also impact the quality of the dressed chicken. For instance, improper chilling or freezing procedures can result in moisture loss, drying out the meat and affecting its tenderness. On the other hand, inadequate storage conditions, such as temperature fluctuations or prolonged storage, can lead to spoilage and degradation of the meat quality.

Time of Slaughter:
The timing of slaughter can also influence the quality of the meat. If chickens are not slaughtered at the appropriate age or weight, it can affect the tenderness, flavor, and overall quality of the dressed chicken.

The importance of achieving desired weight gain within the shortest possible time in broiler farming.

Profitability:
Broiler farming is a commercial venture, and the primary goal is to maximize profits. By achieving the desired weight quickly, farmers can reduce the cost of feed, veterinary care, and other inputs, thereby increasing their profit margins.

Market demand:
The poultry industry is highly competitive, and meeting market demand is crucial for success. Consumers prefer broiler chickens that are of a particular size and weight. Producing broilers that meet market requirements allows farmers to cater to consumer preferences, resulting in higher market acceptance and sales.

Efficient utilization of resources:
Broiler farming requires significant resources such as land, feed, water, and energy. By achieving the desired weight quickly, farmers can optimize the use of these resources. It allows them to produce a higher number of broilers within a given time period, maximizing the efficiency of their production systems.

Health and welfare:
Ensuring that broilers reach their desired weight quickly can contribute to their overall health and welfare. Rapid growth allows farmers to minimize the duration during which broilers are exposed to potential stressors, diseases, and other health issues. This can lead to healthier birds and lower mortality rates.

CULLING IN POULTRY FARMING.

Regular culling in poultry farming refers to the practice of removing weaker or less productive birds from the flock. While it may seem counterintuitive, there are several benefits of regular culling in poultry farming.

1. Improved flock health:
Culling allows farmers to selectively remove birds that are sick, injured, or otherwise unhealthy. By doing so, it helps prevent the spread of disease within the flock. This leads to overall better flock health and reduces the need for medication or antibiotics.

2. Enhanced productivity:
Culling less productive birds helps improve the overall productivity of the flock. By removing birds that are not laying enough eggs or not growing as expected, farmers can focus resources on the remaining birds and ensure better performance in terms of egg production, meat quality, or breeding efficiency.

3. Genetic improvement:
This is most critical in breeder farms. Regular culling allows breeders to selectively breed and raise birds with desirable traits. By removing weaker or undesirable individuals from the breeding pool, it increases the chances of producing offspring with better genetics, such as improved disease resistance, higher egg production, or better growth rates.

4. Optimal resource utilization:
Culling helps in optimizing the utilization of resources, including feed, water, and space. By removing birds that have lower feed conversion rates or are overcrowding the space, farmers can ensure that the remaining birds receive adequate nutrition and have enough space to thrive.

5. Cost savings:
Regular culling reduces the cost of raising and maintaining birds that are not contributing to the desired goals of the farm. By removing less productive or unhealthy birds, farmers can save on feed costs, veterinary expenses, and other resources associated with raising unproductive animals.

6. Improved animal welfare:
Culling plays an important role in ensuring the overall well-being of the flock by removing sick and injured birds promptly.

THE FOUNDATION ( DAY 1 - DAY 10).

It is very important to REMEMBER that in the 8 to 10 days of the Broiler chicks life that the feed conversion ratio is less than 1.

This means that the BROILER CHICKS BODY WEIGHT GAIN IS MORE THAN THE WEIGHT OF THE FEED THAT IS CONSUMED. At this stage the Broiler is most efficient at converting the feed it consumes into meat. This is where your CYCLE can be MADE or BROKEN and you should take ADVANTAGE of this phenomenon.

The Broiler chick during first week of life use eighty percent (80%) of feed consume to grow and twenty percent (20%)for maintenance and after 6 weeks it use eighty percent (80%) of feed consume for maintenance and twenty percent (20%) to grow. It is for this reason that keeping Broiler after 6 wks is not profitable.

How Brazil became a major global player in the Poultry Industry.

Brazil became a major global player in poultry farming through a combination of favorable factors and strategic investments.

1. Abundant resources:

Brazil has vast expanses of fertile land and a favorable climate that are ideal for poultry farming. This enables the country to produce large quantities of animal feed, primarily soybeans and corn, which are crucial for the poultry industry.

2. Competitive advantage in feed production:

Brazil is one of the largest producers and exporters of soybeans and corn globally. The availability of these feed ingredients at a low cost provides a competitive advantage for Brazilian poultry producers, allowing them to produce poultry at lower costs compared to many other countries.

3. Government support and incentives:

The Brazilian government has implemented policies and incentives to promote agricultural development, including in the poultry sector. These measures have facilitated investments in infrastructure, research, and development, fostering the growth of d poultry industry.

4. Strict health and safety standards:

LIVER HEALTH IS VITAL IN BROILER FARMING.

The LIVER is the central Laboratory of a chicken's body. It is essential that this organ is kept in excellent condition in order to maintain a healthy bird.
Problems with liver function have SEVERAL manifestations in BROILER FARMING.

1. BIG BROILERS WITH LIGHTWEIGHT.
This is because the liver produces bile, the main function of bile is to help digest and absorb fat and fat-soluble vitamins. If there is a problem with liver function, there will be less bile production, which will result in poorer fat absorption and slower weight gain in broilers.

2. SLOW GROWTH.
Broilers need protein for growth, and the absorption of lies in the action of various digestive enzymes. The production of digestive enzymes mainly comes from the liver. Problems with the liver function will lead to insufficient enzymes production and impediments in protein synthesis, which will result in the slow development of various tissues and organs ( such as internal organs and muscles), which will eventually lead to an increase in FCR.

As saying goes, broiler farming mainly depends on Management, so good broiler Management should start with Liver health care.

NUMBER OF BAGS TO USE AND FEED 100 LAYERS CHICKS FROM DAY OLD TO THE POINT OF LAYING.

YOU REQUIRE JUST 14 BAGS OF FEED.

1. One layer chick eats 2kg of mash feed from A Day old to 8 weeks multiply by 100 layer chicks divided by 50 to convert to number of bags of feed which will give us 4 bags of feed.

2. One layer chick eats 5kg of mash grower feed from 9 to 18 weeks that is to the point of lay multiply by 100 divided by 50 to get the number of bags which is 10 bags of feed.

FROM POINT OF LAY TO SELLING THEM AS OLD LAYERS

3. ONE LAYER chicken at this this stage it is not called a chick anymore, it must consume 40kg of layer mash feed multiply by 100 birds divided by 50kg to get your number of bags and you will get 80 bags which will be fed from 19weeks up to the time you will sell them as old layers.

80 bags looks alot but it's not, because your chickens at this point are buying feed for themselves from the sales of egg that they are producing on daily basis.

Next time l will cover on the cost of vaccinating 100 layers until they start laying eggs.
