DEAR POULTRY FARMER,

Just because the chickens will be eventually sold and slaughtered it does not mean that they should be treated badly. It is important to remember that a happy flock is a profitable flock.

A good poultry farmer is constantly aware of the welfare, health and environment of his flock. A farmer must closely observe the conditions within the coop and he/she must know how to spot any unusual behaviour. To monitor his flock a farmer can use β€˜stock sense,’

HEARING: The sounds made by the birds is a good indication of what they are feeling.
* The chirpiness of the birds and their vocalization could indicate if they are hungry or cold.

* Respiratory sounds could mean the birds are suffering from an ailment.

* If a knocking noise is heard when the birds are pecking at the feeders, it could mean that the containers are empty.

* A sudden excitable noise from the coop could signal a predator attack or other cause of stress among the birds.

SIGHT: Watching bird behaviour can help a farmer identify problems in the coop.

* Bird Distribution: The way the birds are gathered in coop is important.

* Bird Respiration: If the birds are panting or breathing abnormally it could be suggestive of heat stress or a respiratory disease.

* Bird Behaviour: When behaving normally birds divide their time between feeding, drinking and resting. Anything outside this can be seen as abnormal behaviour.

* Litter Conditions: Farmers should look out for: - Water spillage from drinkers, spilled feed, and other problems in the coop etc.

SMELL: The odours from the coop can be a telling sign of the conditions within.

TASTE AND TOUCH: Touch and taste is another good method of checking coop conditions.

* A farmer should check the water and feed quality regularly.

* He/she should check the ventilation in the coop and make sure there is a comfortable air flow.

* The feed should be checked to see if the crumbs are too dusty or pellets too hard.

* The litter conditions can be checked by picking up a handful of litter, compressing and releasing to see if it is free flowing or clumpy. Clumping suggests that the litter is too moist.

Stock sense will help a farmer become familiar with normal bird behaviour and he/she will gradually be able to identify any changes in behaviour.

While observing bird behaviour a farmer must regularly maintain and analyse farm records on Growth, Feed and Water Consumption, Bird Mortality, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) etc.

A combination of observation and record keeping will help the farmer to identify and correct any shortfalls in performance.

Stock sense combined with the farmer’s knowledge, experience and skills in husbandry will produce a well-rounded farmer who will have the personal qualities such as Patience, Dedication and Empathy when working with the birds.

The Hunting Eagle!!

The baby eagle had just learned to fly… Being full of enthusiasm, he was busy showing off his acrobatics to everyone.

Then he saw a piglet running under the tree, "Mother, look at that pig, how delicious it will be, I will hunt it right now."

β€œNo son,” said the mother, β€œyou are not ready for this yet, the pig is a big prey, you start with the mouse.”

The eagle was obedient, immediately obeying the mother and soon learned to hunt mice with great skill.

Now his confidence was very high, he went to his mother and asked her to hunt the boar again.

β€œNot now son, first you learn to hunt rabbits”, explained the mother.

In a few days, the eagle also learned to hunt rabbits. He was sure that now he can definitely kill his first target pig… and for this he reached to the mother to take permission.

But this time also the mother refused him and asked him to hunt the lamb first. The eagle soon became expert in hunting the lambs.

Then one day he was just sitting on the branch with his mother when a piglet happened to pass by… The eagle looked at its mother… The mother smiled and gestured to pounce on the piglet.

The eagle immediately flew down and ate its favorite food for the first time that day.

Friends, imagine what would have happened if the mother had told him to hunt the boar in the first place itself?

The little eagle would have definitely failed… and possibly lost its confidence. But when he made the first small hunts, both his confidence and his ability grew. And finally he succeeded in achieving his desired goal.

:

This incident of eagle teaches us to achieve our big goal just by dividing it into small easy parts. That's what makes a big goal..!!

Interesting facts of chicken egg fertility that you may not know.

πŸͺΆ It is possible to have a rooster and a hen that are active but a hen can still lay eggs that are not fertile:

I know you may be wondering how, and here is the explanation.
Unlike other birds where you find partners, in chickens there is no courtship or romance. A rooster just forces himself on the hen. So what happens is when a rooster mates a hen, his injected semen is stored in numerous s***m storage tubules (SSTs) located in the area where the hen’s uterus joins the va**na. But this only happens provided the hen likes the rooster. If she doesn’t, she can sq**rt out the semen to avoid hatching his offspring. Therefore a hen may still proceed to lay eggs that are not fertile despite even mating with a rooster every day.

πŸͺΆ Even if the hen approves the rooster, some eggs may still not be fertile:

Since the s***m is released shortly after an egg is laid, and each egg takes approximately 25 hours to develop, an egg produced on the day of mating will not be fertile.

An egg laid the next day may or may not be fertile, depending on the timing. An egg laid on the third day definitely should be fertile.

So as you can see your hen can still have the first two or three eggs that are not fertile despite the hen and a rooster having mated.

πŸͺΆ You don't need a rooster everyday for the hen to continue laying fertile eggs:

The amount of time during which the hen will continue to lay fertile eggs depends on how much s***m fills the SSTs, which are capable of storing semen from multiple matings and multiple roosters.

Highly productive hens generally remain fertile longer than hens that lay at a slower rate. The average duration of fertility from a single mating is 10 to 14 days.
So it is possible that once your hen has mated with a rooster you can even take the rooster away and you can still have fertile eggs for the next 14 days.

πŸͺΆ For first time layers if a rooster has mated with a hen, all her eggs are not always fertile:

Generally speaking, a hen who has mated will be fertile between 7 and 10 days after. It takes that long for the s***m to reach the oviduct where eggs are made. So it is possible that after mating, your hen can still continue to lay eggs that are not fertile for the next 10 days. This is why it is encouraged that for hens that are laying for the first time it is better to eat the eggs for the first two or three weeks instead of attempting to hatch them.

πŸͺΆ Not all roosters have fertile s***m:

This is a sad one. Just like in humans, even in chickens we also have roosters that are infertile.
Why? Who knows. It's maybe just something in his genes not working as it should. Again, very like the human condition. There's not always a rhyme or reason.

NB- This article has been compiled to help people understand why at time they may hear those who provide hatchery services referring to their eggs not having been fertile. We know some have been wondering why the eggs are said not to be fertile yet they have the recommended number of hens and roosters that are also active for that matter.

While the article has been compiled from various sources that we believe to be credible, it is only for general information. For specifics relating to one's flock we still recommend that farmers use the services of professionals.

Thank you for reading.

In your entire life you’ve never reared even one chicken, now you think that just because you have some money, you are ready to invest in the poultry business. You think that after reading from Mr. Google or watching uncle Youtube that you are now set for poultry farming. The character development that will hit you is still doing press ups.

My friend, sacrifice some time and learn from an expert or a consultant. It costs you nothing to ask to visit or volunteer at someone’s farm where they are rearing chicken. Learn about the chicken feeds, learn about poultry management, learn about challenges involved, learn about the market demand and supply, learn about your nearby competitors, learn about how to mix your own feeds. You think someone else will run your chicken business as you relax in the office in a swinging chair or as you sip Fanta baridi at home?
At least first understand the business so that you know the right questions to ask as you manage it remotely.

Your farm employee cannot know your business better than you. And when your employee realizes that they understand the workings of the business better than you, then why would they continue working for you? Or why wouldn’t they cheat you?

If you can’t become an apprentice in another person’s business, then start small. You who has never reared one chicken, what makes you start off with 3000 chicken? Be humble and start with 50,100,200 or 500. Don’t burn your cash.In business what we have is time. Be patient enough to learn. Go slow but surely. Make your mistakes and learn from them.

1. Eagles fly Alone and at High Altitudes.
They don't fly with sparrows, ravens, and other small birds.

MEANING; Stay away from narrow-minded people, those that bring you down. Eagle flies with Eagles. Keep good company.

2. Eagles have an Accurate Vision. They have the ability to focus on something as far as 5km away. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it.

MEANING; Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacles and you will succeed.

3. Eagles do not Eat Dead things. They Feed only on Fresh Prey.

MEANING; Do not rely on your past success, keep looking for new frontiers to conquer. Leave your past where it belongs, in the past.

4. Eagles Love the Storm.
When clouds gather, the eagle gets excited, and the eagle uses the storm's wind to lift itself higher. Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagle uses the raging storm to lift itself above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the branches and leaves of the tree.

MEANING; Face your challenges ahead knowing that these will make you emerge stronger and better than you were. We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid of challenges, rather they relish them and use them profitably.

5. Eagles Prepare for Training;
They remove the feathers and soft grass in the nest so that the young ones get uncomfortable in preparation for flying and eventually fly when it becomes unbearable to stay in the nest.

MEANING; Leave your Comfort Zone, there is No Growth there.

6. When the Eagle Grows Old, His feathers become weak and cannot take him as fast and as high as they should. This makes him weak and could make him die he retires to a place far away in the mountains. While there, he plucks out the weak feathers on his body and breaks its beaks and claws against the rocks until he is completely bare; a very bloody and painful process. Then he stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, new beaks, and claws and then he comes out flying higher than before.

MEANING; We occasionally need to shed off old habits no matter how difficult things that burden us or add no value to our lives should be let go of.
