Healthy crops don’t start in the field. They start in the nursery.
Strong seedlings establish faster, resist stress better and give you a better chance of a good harvest. But seedling quality depends on how they are raised.
A few basics:
• Use clean, viable seed.
• Use well-drained nursery media, not heavy waterlogged soil.
• Sow at the right depth and spacing.
• Water gently and regularly.
• Provide light shade, then reduce it gradually so seedlings can harden off before transplanting.
• Transplant at the right age, when seedlings are strong enough to survive the field.
Weak seedlings carry that weakness to the field. Strong ones give you a head start.
