The "Dutch Clarias" refers to a domesticated strain of the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, developed in the Netherlands for aquaculture. This strain is genetically distinct from wild South African populations of C. gariepinus. It's known for its rapid growth in intensive farming systems and has been exported to various countries, including South Africa and Hungary.

Key characteristics and information about Dutch Clarias:

Domestication:
The Dutch strain was developed through selective breeding over 30 years in the Netherlands.

Aquaculture:
It is widely used in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) due to its suitability for intensive farming.

Growth Rate:
The Dutch Clarias is known for its rapid growth in aquaculture, with some systems reporting 1.8 to 3.5 kg growth in eight months.

Genetic Distinction:
Mitochondrial DNA markers show that the Dutch strain is genetically different from wild South African C. gariepinus populations.

Export:
The Dutch Clarias has been exported to various countries, including South Africa, for aquaculture purposes.

Potential Risks:
There are concerns that if this strain were to escape from aquaculture farms, it could pose a threat to the biodiversity of natural C. gariepinus populations.

Breeding Challenges:
While the Dutch Clarias can be bred monthly, early attempts in South Africa encountered issues with low egg production and fertilization rates.

Feed Performance:
Trials have shown that certain commercial feeds, like Coppens and Skretting, can support good growth rates in Dutch Clarias fingerlings.
