Yesterday on my way to church, something happened that made me think deeply.

I took a route that passes through the railroad — you literally have to climb up the rail and step down.
A lady ahead of me was struggling a bit, so she stretched her hand to a young guy for support.
He pulled back and refused.

Honestly, I didn’t judge him at all.

These days, it’s not about people being wicked or “too proud.”
The truth is that the world is no longer safe.
The help you offer might even put you in trouble.
Some situations can turn out to be setups.
And if anything goes wrong — even by accident — you might be the one blamed.

So people now prefer to mind their business and stay their lane.

I eventually stretched my hand to help her, but even at that moment, a thought crossed my mind:
What if she slipped? What if she suddenly collapsed?
Who would they hold responsible?

This is the world we live in now.
Everyone is just trying to stay safe.

As we go out today, may we not be led into evil.
May we have the spirit of discernment.
And may the Holy Spirit be our guide. Amen.
