MISTAKES THAT DELAYED MY PIG FARM GROWTH (LESSONS FROM EXPERIENCE)

Looking back after many years in this piggery business, I have
identified some mistakes that affected my growth in the early years.

I have listed them out in this article and I hope up and coming pig farmers can learn from them and try to avoid these mistakes.

Let’s go…

1.TRYING TO SAVE MONEY ON FEED INSTEAD OF FEEDING RIGHT

In those early years, I was so focused on feeding cheaply. Maybe because my cash flow was poor.

I looked for plantain peels from Bole women, cassava peels from the farmers and cassava processors in the village, grasses and leaves and a lot of spoilt fruits like watermelon, cabbages etc.

Of-course the pigs ate them well but what was my result, very poor growth and prolonged maturity period. We also had other bad experiences like disease outbreak, still births and mortality all stemming from poor feeding.

From my experience I discovered that feeding cheap is actually more expensive.

So, if I am to go back in time, I will feed balanced feed as against feeding cheaply.

2.KEEPING TOO MANY POOR PERFORMING PIGS

In those early years, I mistook number for growth. Because of this, I was very protective of my pigs so I allowed so many non-performing pigs in my farm.

So I boasted about the number of pigs I had in my farm without considering their returns on my investment.

I had pigs that farrowed very small number of piglets, pigs with poor mothering ability, pigs that grew slowly and so on.

All of these affected my returns and kept my farm bleeding.

If I am to go back in time, I will only keep high performing pigs and cull poor performing pigs as fast as possible.

Number does not equate to profit in piggery.

3.IGNORING PROPER HOUSING

It took me a couple of years to realize that proper housing is very crucial to the well-being of pigs.

I thought piggery was all about sourcing for feed. I learnt the hard way.

Poor housing made cleaning and waste disposal difficult which caused a lot of issues for us ranging from Meningitis, Worm infestation, Diarrhea, Foot rot disease and so many other issues.

These issues caused us money on drugs, delayed the growth of our pigs and many times led to mortality.

If I am to go back in time, I will ensure my pig pens are properly constructed.

4.EXPANDING TOO FAST WITHOUT STRUCTURE

My dream then was to have a 50 sow capacity farm. I calculated that if 50 sows litter average of 10 piglets twice per year, I will be producing 1000 pigs per year.

On paper, it sounded succulent but with all those calculations I ignored where I will keep those 1000 pigs I planned to produce. I also Ignored where to get funds to feed them.

You see, expanding is not the real problem in piggery. Pigs have high fecundity so the numbers can multiply in a very short time. The question is, do you have the structure to hold together the expansion you so desire?

If I am to go back in time, I will grow gradually according to my resources.

5.NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO PIGLET MANAGEMENT

Each dead piglet is loss of future income. I had the belief that the piglet that will survive will survive without having to stress me.

So I was not so keen on properly managing the piglets.

Piglets are serioulsy affected by lack of breast-milk, cold, crushing and Iron deficiency. I paid less attention and lost a lot of piglets.

If I am to go back in time, I will take good care of my piglets.

6.POOR RECORD KEEPING

I had no record. I worked from memory. My workers stole my pigs and I didn’t know because I had poor inventory management.

I couldn’t track the feed consumed as well as the litters from my breeders. My record keeping was a mess.

If I am to go back in time, I will be very keen on record keeping. Everything track-able will be tracked.

WHY PIGLETS ARE DYING BETWEEN 1 - 3 WEEKS OLDIf piglets are born alive and active and begins to d.ie after 1 to 3 weeks ...

WHY PIGLETS ARE DYING BETWEEN 1 - 3 WEEKS OLD

If piglets are born alive and active and begins to d.ie after 1 to 3 weeks old, its not bad luck, it boils down to 3 issues, it is usually MANAGEMENT, NUTRITION OR HYGIENE.

I will try to breakdown the common reasons below

1.LOW MILK PRODUCTION FROM THE SOW

At 1 - 3 weeks old, piglets depend almost 100% on the sow milk.

So if the sow is poorly fed, dehydrated or sick, that will impact on

the volume of milk produced and that can cause the piglets to

starve, then weaken and probably d.ie

To ensure this does not happen, properly formulate the lactating

feed given to the sow to produce sufficient milk. Ensure also that

there supply of sufficient clean water that is uninterrupted.

If the sow is sick, support the piglets with milk and treat the sow of

whatever the illness is. In most cases, it is mastitis or metritis that

can affect milk let down.

2.IRON DEFICIENCY

Piglets are born with low reserves of Iron. Iron supports their

growth which is usually rapid. At 7 to 10 days of age, the Iron in

their system depletes completely and this leads to weakness, pale

skin, poor appetite and sudden death.

Pigs that are on free range often get their Iron need by consuming

red mud. A behavior that is known as geophagy.

To fix this, administer Iron Injection to the piglets between day 3 and 5.

3.POOR HYGIENE AND INFECTION

Piglets within 1 - 3 weeks old have weak immunity. They are easily

affected by infections. Poor hygiene predisposes them to E.Coli,

Diarrhea and Septic infections and any of these can lead to death

of the piglets.

To fix this, disinfect the farrowing pen before birth, keep the floor

clean and dry and if you are using bedding, ensure the bedding is

dry.

4.CRUSHING BY SOW

This is very common in the first 2 weeks. It is usually due to

overweight sow, restless sow, slippery floor, tight farrowing pen

and lack of creep area.

This can be prevented by use of farrowing crates, provision of a

creep area and ensuring the floor is not slippery.

5.COLD STRESS

Piglets between 1 - 3 weeks old don’t have the capacity to regulate

temperature very well. Cold affects piglets in many ways.

Cold leads to weakness. The weakness causes reduced suckling. The

reduced suckling further weakens the piglet and in most cases lead

to death.

To fix this, you must provide warmth for the piglet either by use of

warm bulb, charcoal fire and spreading of straw, wood shave or

sawdust.

In summary, piglets death between 1 - 3 weeks are preventable if

you fix your management, nutrition and hygiene.

Have you experienced piglet deaths at this age? What was the main cause on your farm?

WHY YOUR SOW IS NOT COMING ON HEAT

If you are into pig farming and a breeder, you will understand that ‘HEAT’ is very important in the success and profitability of your pig farm.

For context, heat period is when the sow/gilt is sexually receptive and very ready to mate.

If your pigs come on heat, then the boar will be able to mate them and probably get them pregnant.

Pregnancy means your farm is on its way to multiplication and probably profitability.

But if your pigs are not coming on heat, it can be very frustrating as you will just be feeding the pigs and be losing time.

The below are some of the reasons why your pigs are not coming on heat

1.Poor or Imbalanced Nutrition

Heat is actually energy demanding. If the feed that sow is consuming is not balanced, the sow will delay coming on heat.

The feed must be rich in Energy, Protein and Minerals to enable the sow/gilt come on heat.

So, if your sow/gilt is not coming on heat, check the feed, it might be lacking in nutrient .

2.Excessive Weight Loss After Lactation

Sows that lose much weight during lactation often delay to return to heat.

To avoid delay in heat, ensure your sows are properly fed during lactation.

3.Stress

Stress due to overcrowding, rough handling or poor housing will cause delay in heat.

To fix this, improve the housing condition and reduce overcrowding. Also ensure the sows are not rough handled.

4.Poor Boar Stimulation

Sows need boar stimulation to come on heat. Lack of boar stimulation can sometimes cause delayed heat or missed cycle.

Try to expose your sows to boar to stimulate the heat if your sow is experiencing delayed heat.

5.Health Problems and Infections

Infections such as worms can cause delay in heat.

Always deworm your sows to avoid delay in heat due to worm infestation.

6.Poor Heat detection

Sometimes the fault is from you. The pig might be on heat but you missed it.

Endeavour to check like twice daily for any pig you are expecting to come on heat.

You can also use Estradiol injection to stimulate heat within 4 hours

THE HIDDEN COST KILLING PIG FARMERS' PROFIT IN AFRICA

A lot of pig farmers are frustrated in Africa. The major reason for this frustration is lack of profit.

In fact speaking to 8 out of 10 pig farmers, the complaints are usually similar. You will hear things like …we are just hussling for the butchers…there is no profit in this business…the feed cost is so expensive we can hardly get by and so on.

As much as we acknowledge that there is high cost of feed which impacts on the profit, there are other hidden cost that affects the profitability of piggery in Africa and I will be pointing out on them in this article.

1.FEED WASTAGE

A lot of farmers lose money through feed wastage. Pigs have a certain quantity of feed that they consume daily. As a rule of thumb, pigs consume feed that is equivalent to 4% of their body weight daily.

What this implies is that a pig of 50kg in weight should not consume more than 2.5kg of feed daily. A lot of farmers are ignorant of this information and as such, overfeed their pigs. Pigs tend to waste the excess and this impacts on the profitability of the business.

Another avenue through which feed is wasted is bad or poorly constructed feeder. A poorly constructed feeder can waste between 10 to 20% of feed served. Poorly constructed feeder can impact your profit in piggery negatively.

So, as a pig farmer, look out for feed wastage. It is one way through which your profit slips away.

2. SLOW GROWTH DUE TO POOR NUTRITION

Cheap or imbalanced feed might be cheap on the surface but will eat into your profit on the long run.

When your pig feed is cheap and imbalanced, you will likely experience the following

I. Longer time for your pig to hit market weight.

II. More feed consumed per pig. An imbalanced feed can lead to more feed consumption as the energy content is usually not sufficient.

III. The more the feed consumed, the higher the cost per kg live-weight.

So, slow growth = Higher cost, even if feed is cheap.

3. POOR BREEDING DECISIONS

Keeping poor performing pigs is one way that you make losses in piggery.

Using a weak boar to breed produces weak piglets that will respond poorly to feed and affect your profit.

Also, keeping sows that are unproductive or litter small number of piglets is a hidden way that affects your profit.

Another hidden way is keeping pigs that don’t respond properly to feed. There are farms you will visit and pigs of 8 months are still weighing 30kg. That is not business in all honesty, it is punishment. Cull pigs that are not responding to feed.

4.PIGLET MORTALITY

Each dead piglet = lost future income

Most piglet losses happen due to the following

I. Low milk or lack of milk

II. Poor hygiene

III. Cold stress

IV. Piglet crushing

V. Iron deficiency

Mortality that is caused by any of the above is preventable and affects your profit.

5.DISEASE FROM POOR BIOSECURITY

One disease outbreak that is preventable through proper biosecurity can

I. Wipe out your pigs and lead to losses

II. Increase drug cost and deplete your profit

III. Slow down the growth of your pigs and increase your turn around time

Adherence to strict biosecurity protocol is cheaper than cure.

6. WATER NEGLECT

Dirty or insufficient water can lead to the following

I. Reduced feed intake: When pigs don’t drink water, it affects their feed intake.

II. Poor Growth: Poor feed intake leads to poor growth.

III. Health Issues: Lack of water or dirty water can trigger certain health issues

Water is actually very cheap but lack of it is expensive. Supply your pigs with sufficient clean water. Install ni**le drinkers to aid that.

The above are the hidden ways that profit depletes in pig farming. Losses in Piggery is not only about feed cost.

BOAR VS SOW: WHO ACTUALLY DETERMINES PIGLET PERFORMANCE.

I get this question a lot of the time from pig farmers. It will be addressed in this article.

The honest truth about this is that both of them matter but in different ways.

THE BOAR DETERMINES WHAT WE CALL THE GENETIC POTENTIAL

The boar contributes 50% of the genes but its impact is very huge because it controls the following

1.He influences growth rate

2.Muscle development

3.Feed conversion ratio

4.Disease resistance

5.Uniformity of piglets

A poor quality boar can mess up your farm because one bad boar = many weak piglets

THE SOW DETERMINES THE ACTUAL PERFORMANCE

The boar might have very good traits but the sow plays a very important role because she controls the following

1.The quality of womb environment

2. The number of piglets conceived and carried to term

3. Birth weight of piglets

4. Milk production

5. Mothering ability

Let me try to explain some of these.

The genes from the boar controls the piglets potentials for growth and development but the sow provides the needed environment (womb), the needed care and nutrition for that potential to be actualized.

If the potential is there but the care is not there, then the piglets will perform poorly and if the care is there and the genes are poor, the piglets will perform poorly.

So, great piglets come from good genetics from the boar plus a sow that is properly managed.

ADVICE TO FARMERS

1. Never use an average or sickly boar for breeding.

2. Feed breeding sow with nutrient dense feed before and after mating

3. Cull sows with poor mothering ability or repeated low litter size

4. Don’t ignore boar nutrition and health.

KEY TAKEAWAY

To improve your farm, get a very good boar and manage your sows properly.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR FINISHING PIGS GAIN A LOT OF WEIGHT BEFORE SALES

One way to enjoy sales of your pigs is for your pigs to look healthy with a lot of weight.

In the part of the world where we operate from, prices are not regulated. The leverage you have with the butchers is if your pigs are properly finished.

By properly finished I mean your pigs to look healthy and well fed.

If your pigs look well fed, the buyers will scramble to buy from you and they will be at your mercy. You will be able to fix a higher price and they will buy from you without complain. However, if your pigs look skinny and not well fed…ha…the buyers will frustrate you. They will price your pigs what a vulture prices a co**se (Igbo adage).

That is why it is important to fatten your pigs properly before sales and in this article I will show you how.

The first you will do as you prepare to fatten your pigs is to deworm them. Worms are parasites and can frustrate your efforts if you don’t eradicate them. No matter how nutritious your feed is, if the pigs are infested with worms, they will not fatten well because as the pigs eat, the worms will consume the food, leaving very little for the pigs to fatten with.

So, expel the worms using a good dewormer like LEVAMISOLE.

Secondly and most importantly, fortify the feed with enough Carbohydrate. Carbohydrate is directly responsible for weight gain.

A lot of farmers are ignorant about this and that is why they stick to Palm Kernel Cake (PKC). PKC is mainly fiber. Fiber materials such as PKC, wheat bran, Rice bran, Brewery waste etc cannot fatten pigs. PKC that contains oil can try but will not get the job done quickly.

If you want your pigs to gain a lot of weight in a short while, fortify their feed with proper Carbohydrate like Potatoes flour, Cassava, Wheat, Indomie dough, Spaghetti dough, Maize etc.

You will be amazed at the kind of weight the pigs will amass in a short while and when you call in buyers, they will scramble to buy at your price. What this means is more profit for you.

So make the change today, add proper Carbohydrate to your pig feed for better profit in your business.

Share your pig fattening experience in the comments.

CASSAVA PEELS; COST SAVER BUT DANGEROUS FOR PIGS

If you are a pig farmer, there is always a material in large supply in your area of operation that can be used to reduce your feed cost. We call it comparative advantage in Economics.

And because pigs have 115 taste buds, you can easily add some of these materials that is in abundance to the feed at an acceptable inclusion rate.

Our farm is located in Rivers State, Nigeria, and one material we have in large quantity is Cassava Peels. We get it for almost free.

We use it to subsidize our feed cost and it serves both as a filler and a source of energy and fiber.

I will share a true life story now of what cassava peels did to our pigs…

It happened about 8 years ago. Cassava peels was part of our feed formula. So we usually collect it from the community where our farm is based. To make collection easy for my workers, I bought a bike.

So every evening, one of the staff will drive around the community and collect the peels, which we usually ensile for 3 days before adding to the pig feed.

One afternoon I came to the farm and noticed there was no cassava peels to use for the evening meal. I asked my manager why that was, he was incoherent…no reason at all, just laziness. I was furious. I shouted and shouted and stormed out of the farm gate to cool my head. I was really angry because I had sent my manager money for fuel, so they had no reason not to have gone for the peels.

Our plantain plantation is located at the back of the piggery. So I went into the plantation to cool my head. The breeze in that plantation is therapeutic, it makes one to calm down.

While I was at the Plantation, I noticed the pigs were screaming for food and the boys were serving them their evening meal so I decided to return to the piggery. On entering the piggery, the first thing I noticed were bags of freshly peeled cassava peels. When I looked inside the feed trough, they had already served them the feed mixed with the fresh cassava peels.

My mind started racing because I knew trouble was brewing.

Apparently, when I went to the plantain plantation, my staff moved into the community and got fresh cassava peels, returned back to the farm and used it to mix their feed without ensiling.

Before I could scream, four of the pigs had already started reacting. The scene was scary. The pig eyes turned black with blood coming out like tears from their eyes. The pigs fell down and were shivering, before I could do anything, we had lost 4 pigs of about 40kg.

Oh my…I was devastated…everybody was just panicking because we didn’t know the extent of the damage that it will cause. We eventually lost 5 pigs from that incident.

Here is the fact, fresh cassava peels contains high amount of cyanide. When such peels are consumed by pigs, the cyanide poisons their system and mortality can be very swift.

So to use cassava peels, you must ensile it (put it in a bag and leave it for 3 days) or soak it in water for like 3 days to ferment before adding it to the pig feed.

If you use fresh peels, I am afraid, it might affect your pigs.

MAJOR CAUSE OF PIGLET MORTALITY

As a farmer that is into breeding, your reward is from the piglets your sows litter.

That means, your profit is hinged on the number of piglets produced in your farm. So your effort should be geared towards keeping those piglets alive.

I will be sharing one of the major cause of piglet mortality that many farmers are ignorant about.

This is a true life story...

So yesterday, one of our customers came to the office very early. Usually, we open office by 8am.

I met him when I got to the office by 7:55am…he was already waiting.

You could see WORRY written all over his face.

Pastor…what is the problem? I enquired

“Mr. Frank, I don’t know what is happening in my farm” …he answered. “Last week, my pig littered 12 piglets, within a space of two days, I lost all the piglets. Yesterday again, one of my sow littered in the morning…10 piglets, by this morning, none is alive” he said…”and my major worry now is that I have 20 more Sows that are pregnant and will be due in a few weeks”

He had to run down to our office because he needed to know the cause and find solution.

I asked him the condition of the piglets before dying, he said they usually first look weak and be shivering and be making squeaky sound.

I then followed him to his farm, pressed the ni**le of the sow and it confirmed my suspicion…lack of breast milk.

LACK OF BREAST MILK referred to as AGALACTIA is one of the major cause of piglets mortality.

It can cause 100% mortality when not detected early.

Imbibe this practice in your farm, when your sow farrows, press the ni**le and check for breast milk. Do that periodically because sometimes the milk might flow and then stop.

Also, always administer OXYTOCIN INJECTION when your pigs farrow. It helps to push down sufficient breast milk for the piglets to enjoy.

Nutrition wise, feed your pigs with balanced feed that contains sufficient Carbohydrate. Molasses is particularly good for milk production. Then there is Potatoes, Maize, Cassava, wheat etc. All of these energy dense food helps to boost breast milk production in pigs.

Sometimes, this lack of breast milk could be caused by an infection called MASTITIS. In that case, you will notice that the breast is hard and when you press the ni**les, the sow will feel pain.

If MASTITIS IS THE CAUSE of lack of the breast milk, treat it with PENSTREP INJECTION.

Penstrep heals the infection while Oxytocin pushes down the breastmilk. This combination given over a period of 3 days will stop the situation and your piglets wont d.ie.

Remember to fortify the sow feed with sufficient Carbohydrate.

Have you encountered piglet mortality due to lack of breast milk? Share your experience in the comments
