MISTAKES THAT DELAYED MY PIG FARM GROWTH (LESSONS FROM EXPERIENCE)
Looking back after many years in this piggery business, I have
identified some mistakes that affected my growth in the early years.
I have listed them out in this article and I hope up and coming pig farmers can learn from them and try to avoid these mistakes.
Let’s go…
1.TRYING TO SAVE MONEY ON FEED INSTEAD OF FEEDING RIGHT
In those early years, I was so focused on feeding cheaply. Maybe because my cash flow was poor.
I looked for plantain peels from Bole women, cassava peels from the farmers and cassava processors in the village, grasses and leaves and a lot of spoilt fruits like watermelon, cabbages etc.
Of-course the pigs ate them well but what was my result, very poor growth and prolonged maturity period. We also had other bad experiences like disease outbreak, still births and mortality all stemming from poor feeding.
From my experience I discovered that feeding cheap is actually more expensive.
So, if I am to go back in time, I will feed balanced feed as against feeding cheaply.
2.KEEPING TOO MANY POOR PERFORMING PIGS
In those early years, I mistook number for growth. Because of this, I was very protective of my pigs so I allowed so many non-performing pigs in my farm.
So I boasted about the number of pigs I had in my farm without considering their returns on my investment.
I had pigs that farrowed very small number of piglets, pigs with poor mothering ability, pigs that grew slowly and so on.
All of these affected my returns and kept my farm bleeding.
If I am to go back in time, I will only keep high performing pigs and cull poor performing pigs as fast as possible.
Number does not equate to profit in piggery.
3.IGNORING PROPER HOUSING
It took me a couple of years to realize that proper housing is very crucial to the well-being of pigs.
I thought piggery was all about sourcing for feed. I learnt the hard way.
Poor housing made cleaning and waste disposal difficult which caused a lot of issues for us ranging from Meningitis, Worm infestation, Diarrhea, Foot rot disease and so many other issues.
These issues caused us money on drugs, delayed the growth of our pigs and many times led to mortality.
If I am to go back in time, I will ensure my pig pens are properly constructed.
4.EXPANDING TOO FAST WITHOUT STRUCTURE
My dream then was to have a 50 sow capacity farm. I calculated that if 50 sows litter average of 10 piglets twice per year, I will be producing 1000 pigs per year.
On paper, it sounded succulent but with all those calculations I ignored where I will keep those 1000 pigs I planned to produce. I also Ignored where to get funds to feed them.
You see, expanding is not the real problem in piggery. Pigs have high fecundity so the numbers can multiply in a very short time. The question is, do you have the structure to hold together the expansion you so desire?
If I am to go back in time, I will grow gradually according to my resources.
5.NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO PIGLET MANAGEMENT
Each dead piglet is loss of future income. I had the belief that the piglet that will survive will survive without having to stress me.
So I was not so keen on properly managing the piglets.
Piglets are serioulsy affected by lack of breast-milk, cold, crushing and Iron deficiency. I paid less attention and lost a lot of piglets.
If I am to go back in time, I will take good care of my piglets.
6.POOR RECORD KEEPING
I had no record. I worked from memory. My workers stole my pigs and I didn’t know because I had poor inventory management.
I couldn’t track the feed consumed as well as the litters from my breeders. My record keeping was a mess.
If I am to go back in time, I will be very keen on record keeping. Everything track-able will be tracked.
