"WE ARE WORKING ON IT"
That was the promise.
Every year, we hear it.
"We will create jobs."
"We will stabilize the economy."
"We will reduce hardship."
"We will improve electricity."
"We will strengthen the naira."
And every year, millions of ordinary Nigerians sit quietly in their rooms like this, staring into space, wondering when those promises will finally become reality.
Across the country, people wake up every morning with hope. New skills are learned, opportunities are searched for, applications are submitted, and prayers are made, all while believing that tomorrow will be better.
But reality keeps hitting harder.
Food prices rise. Transport fares increase. Rent becomes more expensive. The value of savings disappears.
Many spend sleepless nights calculating bills that cannot be paid and responsibilities that refuse to wait.
The painful part is not the struggle.
Nigerians are used to struggling.
The painful part is being given hope repeatedly and watching that hope expire like an unpaid subscription.
Yet somehow, we keep moving.
We still pray.
We still hustle.
We still help one another.
Because if there is one thing stronger than government promises, it is the resilience of ordinary Nigerians.
But resilience should not become an excuse for endless suffering.
A nation where hardworking citizens cannot afford a decent life is a nation that needs more than promises.
It needs results.
