How many containers can one reverse vending machine handle?

At one location in Bunschoten-Spakenburg, the answer is 10 million since 2024. Shoppers bring their bottles and cans in a bag and empty it into the Envipco Quantum in one go, without sorting. The location has since installed a second Quantum of the same type.

What should the last step of a bottle return look like? ♻️

For us, the answer is short: as little as possible.

On Envipco Optima and Magna RVMs in Poland, you can now finish your return by tapping your bank card on the reader. The deposit refund goes directly to your card, so you can leave the machine with nothing extra to keep track of.

We see refund options as part of what makes a deposit return system easy to use 🙌

Vouchers and digital refunds work well for many people, and a card refund gives them one more way to get their deposit back, in the way that suits them, making it ideal for public municipal return points and retailers alike.

The card reader is available in Poland and can be added as an option in other markets.

Today marks one year since Poland's deposit return system went live.

A year ago the system started from zero. Retailers were preparing collection points, operators were building logistics from scratch, and consumers were picking up a new habit at the store entrance. Twelve months later, the Ministry of Climate and Environment has shared what that work adds up to:

♻️ 5 billion containers returned
📍 65,500 collection points across the country
⚙️ Around 90% of volume collected through automated collection points
📈 Roughly 0.9 billion containers a month over July, August and September

A lot of people stand behind these numbers. The ministry and system operators set the framework. Thousands of shops, from national chains to independent stores, made space, trained staff and kept collection points running through the first busy summer. And millions of people across Poland now bring their bottles and cans back as part of their weekly shopping.

Envipco has been part of the system since day one. Our team in Poland has worked alongside retailers and operators through installation, launch and the steady growth in volumes that followed. We're proud to have played a part in a system that is now part of everyday shopping in Poland.
