It was the 18th hour of the longest stretch in the history of the RENAE Test Kitchen. The team was exhausted, but they finally cracked it - the ultimate Mango Habanero sauce. Full of texture and zest. Like biting into a perfect piece of fruit on a grassy knoll overlooking a turquoise, Caribbean sea. A dip of heat to remind you it’s there. With a run-on full of adventure and mischief. They rushed the prototype upstairs to management and presented with the confidence of Don Draper in a boardroom of to***co executives. This was it.
The lieutenants tasted, nodded, waited; not wanting to be the first to comment. They glanced sideways to the head of the table, where Harry Habanero swirled the sauce in his mouth, pondered, squinted…then dumped the test vial on the floor. “This needs to taste like candy at the end. I want Madrileñas to get CANDY at the end. Start over.” And with a nod to the door, the test team was dismissed.
This, legend has it, is how we got the famous saying - “You don’t get candy at the end without breaking some eggs.”
