Ever wondered what the journey of a sunflower seed actually looks like? 🌻 We recently got a behind-the-scenes look, and it all starts in the fields of Romania and Bulgaria.
A few weeks ago, we followed that journey right at the source, in the heart of the “Sunflower Belt.” It’s a region that quietly plays a huge role in global agriculture, producing millions of tons of wheat, corn, and sunflower each year, all largely rainfed, relying on nature to do its job. And that’s where things get real.
In Bulgaria, farming is almost entirely rainfed. No irrigation, just timing, experience, and a bit of luck with the weather. And lately, that’s been getting harder. When the rain doesn’t come in July or August, right when sunflowers need it most, seeds don’t fully develop, impacting both size and yield.
Farmers here are navigating some real challenges:
• Shifting climate patterns and less predictable rainfall
• Smaller seeds due to heat and drought stress
• The transition from conventional to organic, often without financial support during the process
But what stood out most was the care behind it all.
Fields aren’t just fields; they’re designed with nature in mind. Borders help protect crops, pollinators are supported by nearby forests and villages, and even bee boxes are placed to help ecosystems thrive.
Once harvested, the sunflower seeds begin their next phase moving through a highly coordinated system of river barges and storage siloes before processing. They’re cleaned, sorted, and graded before moving into different paths. Some are dehulled and processed into kernels, used in bakery and confectionery products. Others are pressed and refined into sunflower oil, going through filtration and winterization to meet different market needs before reaching customer across global markets.
What seems simple on the surface is actually backed by a complex, thoughtful system.
Trips like this are a reminder: behind every product, there are people, ecosystems, and decisions shaping the outcome.
And it all starts with a seed. 🌻
