All good things come to an end….
After a few moves around Amsterdam’s city centre, De Wijnwinkel settled at 23 Runstraat in 1986.
From here, we have spent the past 40 years supplying the residents of the Jordaan and surrounding neighbourhoods with wine. The first restaurants we supplied were Caffè Toscanini and Balthazars Keuken. Since then, many more well-known and lesser-known restaurants, cafés and wine bars have joined our list of customers, both in Amsterdam and beyond.
Our starting point has always remained the same: working with talented European winemakers who make wines that make you thirsty for another glass.
In the 1980s and ’90s, the 9 Streets were a lively mix of shops serving everyday needs — bakeries, grocers, butchers and small specialty shops. Over time, that function has slowly disappeared. The change is perhaps most visible in what now attracts the most attention: queues of tourists waiting for fries or cookies, rather than shops where local residents can do their daily shopping.
The city is always changing, and we have never had the illusion that we could stop the changes taking place in our neighbourhood. What we can do, however, is make sure that you, our customers, continue to feel at home in our shop and on our street. That you can simply park your bike on the pavement in front of the shop and stop for a chat in the street. Because how lovely is it to stroll or cycle, shopping bag in hand, from the supermarket via the butcher and the baker to your friends at De Wijnwinkel, and choose a nice bottle on a quiet street without TikTok queues?
After 40 years, we’re ready for a new home — one that reflects who we are and what we do.
Our new corner shop at 8 Eerste Looiersdwarsstraat ticks all the important boxes: a charming shop just a stone’s throw from our current location, on a quiet and peaceful street, and around the corner from the Elandsgracht, where you can do the rest of your shopping.
From Saturday, August 29, you’re very welcome to visit us at Eerste Looiersdwarsstraat. Until then, we’ll be open as usual, while quietly moving things over to our new home in the meantime.
