Lebogang Makomene left Johannesburg at seventeen, worked at the 2010 World Cup, built a career across three continents, and ended up in a building she had noticed on her very first day in Amsterdam.

She now works as a freelance financial consultant at CBRE Investment Management in WTC Amsterdam, moving between reporting, compliance, forecasting, and strategic planning. She adapts fast, builds trust across clients and contexts, and has learned to stay open rather than boxed in.

“You will make AI mistakes. The race is who makes them first.”

Ruben Timmerman did not hold back. Yesterday, WTC Live brought together people from tech, finance and impact to dig into what AI really means for the way we hire, lead and build.

Merve Karaman pushed back on going it alone: “Don’t create ego systems, but ecosystems.” Merle Bartsch named the trap most organisations are falling into: we are confusing output for outcome, and without value AI will only make us faster at the wrong work. Rob Steur made the talent case clear: recruit for attitude, train for skills.
