Those usual 36-hour fasts I do back home completely go out the window in Japan! 😅 There is just a special kind of joy that comes with hitting up a 7-11, FamilyMart, or Lawson at midnight.

Paul and I couldn't resist a late-night conbini run. Last night’s haul was made of these absolute gems:

🍮 OHAYO Crème Brûlée Ice Cream (the crackly top is amazing)
🥞 Fluffy Pancakes with Maple Syrup & Margarine
🥪 The classic Mixed Sandwich (Tuna Cucumber Salad, Pork Ham, Lettuce & Egg)
🐟 Sardine Crackers with Yuzu & Soy Sauce
🍘 Soy Sauce Fried Rice Crackers
🍓 Meiji Apollo "My Style" Strawberry Chocolates
🍵 Assorted bottled teas to wash it all down

👑👑👑 All were expectedly delicious but our favorites are the Sardine crackers and the Creme Brulee ice cream

Have you ever tried Japanese convenience store food? What would you grab first? 👇

Today's lunch is simple comfort food 🍤🍠🌱🍚

Tendon — Tempura + rice + sweet tensuyu sauce.

Not the absolute best tempura, but definitely good enough and very reasonably priced. It was a super filling lunch including soup, pickles, veggies, plus extra kabocha and cheese tempura on the side for 1500 yen (a little over €8 or PhP580).

I shop like a man. I have a list of things to buy, favorite shops to check, I execute, and that's it. Paul, however, shops like a girl. He spent an hour trying things on just to come out of the shop with a single shirt! 🤦‍♀️

So, after walking 15,000 steps around Namba in 30°C sunny weather, when he suddenly decided he wanted to check out shoes at Dotonbori, I tapped out. I told him to drop me at Hoshino Coffee so I could rest my feet while he did his shopping.

Cold lemonade and an order of the viral fluffy pancake are my form of recovery. To be brutally honest, the pancake is dry as hell and pretty tasteless—you absolutely need that pitcher of syrup to soften it up and give it some flavor. 🥞🍋

But sitting here, looking out over Dotonbori and listening to the prattle of different languages while the air con rages on, is pretty awesome. My feet are definitely happy. ✨

Do you also do mini-breaks during your travels? I never did this in my 30s but now in my 40s, I need these mini-breaks.

There will be absolutely no cooking for me for the next two weeks. Yaay! 🎉 Instead, I will be doing, ermmm, actual in-depth research on food... Nom, nom, nom. 😆

Our first meal in Asia feels like a potent harbinger of good eats for the rest of our trip.

This is YuZhiLan at Shanghai Pudong Airport, the airport outpost of the famous Michelin-starred Chengdu restaurant. Delicious! Slightly pricier than normal airport fare, buuut Paul and I ordered a lot and still paid way less for this feast than the 50 Euros we shelled out for a lunch of bland "ramen" noodle soup in paper bowls and two bottles of mineral water at Schipol. 🙄 Sigh.

Here is what we had:
🍲 Dry-cooked beef with rice and beef soup
🍚 Yangzhou fried rice with beef soup
🥟 Crab roe xiao long bao
🧋 HK-style milk tea & Oolong iced tea

My opinion is that when it comes to good food at great prices, nothing beats Asian airports. Do you agree? Let me know below! 👇

Paul's WFH Lunch: Homemade Palabok & Charsiu Bao made in Just 30 Minutes!
⏰️

Craving Pansit Palabok and Charsiu Bao but short on time? Today's delicious lunch was 'done and dusted' in record speed!

🗡My secret weapon is pre-portioning.
I make large batches of homemade Palabok and Bolognese sauces and freeze them in handy packs. One portion is perfectly sized for two servings.

For this satisfying meal, I only had to:
⭐️Boil a few eggs.🥚🥚
⭐️Quickly cook the thin noodles in boiling water (they only take 5 minutes!).🍜
⭐️Crush some store-bought Pork Chicharon for that essential crunch.

In no time at all, we had authentic, homemade-feeling Palabok, loaded with as many toppings as we liked. 🍽🍛

To make it a complete meal, I served it with ready-to-steam charsiu bao bought from Bakery Li & Q (they have branches in DH and Rott. Chinatown).

This is a perfect example of how pre-made components can create quick and tasty Filipino freezer meals. 😊

🍫 The EASIEST Chocolate Cookies You Will Ever Make! (No Mixer, No Butter!) 🍫

A week ago, my stepmom and niece asked me for a super easy recipe my niece could bake with her friends. They were leaning toward muffins, but I stopped them right there. 🛑 I told them they had to make these ridiculously easy chocolate cookies—a recipe I’ve been using for decades!

Why is this the ultimate beginner bake?
• No special ingredients: Just cocoa powder, vanilla, baking powder, and pantry staples.
• No powdered sugar? No problem! We skip the crinkle step and make them standard cookies.
• Total blank canvas: Have leftover M&Ms, nuts, or raisins? Toss them in! You can even stuff the centers with jam, Nutella, or peanut butter. 🥜🍓

This recipe is very basic but is a perfect canvas for creativity. That is one reason why I think baking these cookies is a great bonding activity for family, friends, and even in school.

Fun fact: I first baked chocolate crinkles in my all-girls high school baking class. Pretty sure ours turned out as hard as rocks back then, hahaha! 😂

Okay, enough blah-blah. Let me show you how to make it in the pics below! ( Also check out the reels video for this recipe😊).
