Review: Big Head Wines 2023 Chenin Blanc

Big Head Wines 2023 Chenin Blanc is an elegant and surprisingly accessible white wine from Ontario, Canada. This wine combines a light, golden yellow colour with a buttery texture in the glass, which immediately promises a rich and refined experience.

Flavour profile:

This Chenin Blanc opens with a deliciously fruity nose, followed by a subtle balance between a light sweetness and a fresh citrus note. The grapes were harvested late, slightly increasing the sugar content and creating a slight influence of noble rot. This gives the wine its characteristic, slightly sweet flavour with nice complexity.

Food pairing:

Thanks to its versatile flavour, this wine goes well with poultry, fish dishes, fresh salads and cheeses. Think grilled sea bass, a creamy goat cheese or a salad with citrus fruits and nuts. The light sweetness and fresh acidity also make the wine perfect as an aperitif.

Price-quality:

Big Head Wines 2023 Chenin Blanc offers excellent value for money. It is an accessible and refined wine with a nice depth, ideal for both novice and experienced wine lovers.

With this Chenin Blanc, Big Head Wines once again shows how to make characterful and expressive wines that reflect Ontario's unique terroir.

Review: Big Head Wines Red #10

Big Head Wines Red #10 is an impressive blend from Ontario, Canada. This ruby red wine combines power with suppleness and offers a rich, layered flavour experience.

Flavour profile:

Red #10 has a full body and supple structure. The first impression is dominated by ripe forest fruits, followed by subtle spicy notes that add depth. The blend of different vintages and vinification methods (appassimento & fresh) gives the wine a unique complexity. The appassimento technique, in which grapes are dried to concentrate sugars and flavours, contributes to the powerful and concentrated flavour.

Blend & Character:

The composition of Red #10 is special and thoughtful:
• 20% 2021 Malbec (appassimento) - Rich structure and deep fruit aromas.
• 8% 2023 Cabernet Franc & Merlot (appassimento & fresh) - Balance between freshness and ripe notes.
• 15% 2024 Cabernet Sauvignon (appassimento) - Power and tannins for a firm backbone.
• 31% 2024 Cabernet Franc (fresh) - Black berries and spiciness.
• 13% 2024 Merlot (fresh) - Soft fruity notes and roundness.
• 8% 2024 Malbec (appassimento) - Extra concentration and depth.
• 5% 2024 Dornfelder (appassimento) - Subtle hints of dark chocolate and spice.

Food pairing:

This wine comes into its own with red meat and game dishes. Think of a tender sirloin steak, a spicy game stew or a grilled leg of lamb. Its powerful flavour and velvety finish make it an ideal wine for dinners with pronounced dishes.

Price-quality:

For the complexity and craftsmanship behind this wine, the value for money is excellent. Big Head Wines Red #10 is a versatile wine that will appeal to novice and experienced wine lovers alike.

Big Head Wines stays true to their innovative and artisanal approach with Red #10, once again delivering a wine that beautifully expresses Ontario's terroir.
