Among the various blends Australia successfully produces, the combination of Shiraz and Cabernet has emerged as the ultimate expression of Australian winemaking prowess. Shiraz, also known as Syrah, is a varietal that thrives in Australia's warm climate, producing rich, full bodied wines with dark fruit flavours and a signature spiciness. On the other hand, Cabernet Sauvignon, with its structured tannins and notes of blackcurrant and eucalyptus, adds depth and complexity to the blend. The blend gained international recognition as Australian wines surged in global markets during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Iconic producers such as Penfolds and Wynn's championed the blend, showcasing its potential for both early enjoyment and extended ageing. Some of our most popular, loved and awarded wines are Shiraz/Cabernet blends not to mention Grange as the most recognised.
As Australia continues to lead the way in the world of wine, the harmonious blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon will undoubtedly remain a symbol of its enduring legacy and influence.

Margaret River, Western Australia, McHenry Hohnen Wines stands as a testament to the region's rich winemaking history and commitment to producing exceptional wines. Established in 2004 by the collaborative efforts of David Hohnen and Murray McHenry, this winery has swiftly risen to prominence for its dedication to sustainable practices, artisanal craftsmanship, and the production of distinctive wines that capture the essence of the Margaret River terroir.
Hazel’s Vineyard Chardonnay is a wine made with a confident, understated hand. Sourced from one of McHenry Hohnen’s southernmost parcels in Margaret River, this Chardonnay is very much a product of place. The first swirl usually offers a hit of luminous citrus before slipping into more generous layers of nectarine, white peach, frangipani and that unmistakable mineral flicker reminiscent of struck flint. Given a moment to stretch in the glass, it introduces nuttier accents: roasted cashew, nougat, warm brioche.
Over the years, this Chardonnay has collected its share of praise: top tier reviews, accolades in international competitions, and a reputation among collectors as a Margaret River Chardonnay with staying power. Enjoy it with dishes that appreciate subtlety—roast chicken with thyme, creamy seafood pastas, or lobster in lemon butter—or pour it solo when you want a white wine that rewards unhurried attention. As a long term favourite Australian producer of ours, there remains something quietly confident about Brokenwood Wines, a sense that it doesn’t need to shout to be heard. Tucked into the storied soils of Australia’s Hunter Valley, Brokenwood has built a reputation not on flash, but on consistency, curiosity, and a genuine respect for the craft of winemaking.
What really stands out is the range. There’s their classic Semillon, which is super fresh and crisp (and only gets better with time), and then you’ve got Shiraz that’s rich and full but still really balanced. It doesn’t feel like they’re chasing trends or trying to impress it feels more like they’re just focused on making each wine as good as it can be.
For quality, the wines are controlled and balanced. The result is wines that present their fruit and structure in a straightforward way.
At the same time, Brokenwood does not rely only on established styles. There is enough variation in the range for every type of wine preference, including different blends and less common varietals, which adds interest without straying too far from its core identity.
Overall, Brokenwood Wines offers a dependable selection with enough variety to remain relevant, while maintaining a clear and consistent approach across its range. Get your hands on some of Australia's best today.https://www.theaustralianwinecompany.com/collections/brokenwood

Bannockburn Wines, nestled in Victoria’s cool climate region near Geelong, is one of the premier producers in Australia for over the last 25 years. Their Chardonnay is a study in precision – crisp, vibrant, with subtle stone fruit and a creamy texture that lingers. Pinot Noir from Bannockburn is silky, layered, and utterly drinkable, boasting red cherry, earthy undertones, and that delicate hint of spice that makes it crave-worthy. Even their Shiraz, grown in the cooler corners of the estate, surprises with restraint, freshness, and a bright, peppery lift rather than overwhelming weight. If you're able to get your hands on a bottle or two in mainland Europe, do yourself a favour and stock up because the moment you start with Bannockburn there's no looking back. Perhaps we'll be fortunate enough to have them available in our webshop, in the not too distant futture.

The Australian Wine Company is pleased to now a offer a producer that defines Australian winemaking, as it deliberately seeks out parcels of land that reflects the subtle nuances of Australia’s diverse climates rather than acquiring whatever fruit is available. The Handpicked portfolio is a celebration of balance with cool climate Pinots that offer red fruited purity and subtle spice, while their Chardonnays are layered, textural, and crystalline.
Handpicked’s vineyards are carefully curated ecosystems. Capella, in the Mornington Peninsula remains the flagship, with its cool climate slopes producing vibrant, aromatic Pinots and Chardonnays. In the Yarra Valley, the team works with undulating hills and clay loam soils to cultivate wines with structure and elegance. Tasmania contributes a mineral driven dimension, with its high acid Chardonnays and restrained sparkling wines. Handpicked demonstrates that Australian wine can be both approachable and intellectually rewarding — wines you enjoy immediately, but also want to explore season by season, vintage by vintage. The Australian Wine Company has now one of Margaret River’s quiet overachievers: thoughtful, precise and never flashy. Moss Wood, founded in 1969, has built its reputation on consistency and an almost obsessive focus on site. Ribbon Vale adds another compelling chapter one that complements Moss Wood’s classic style with its own distinctive voice.
Ribbon Vale sits on gently sloping land with gravelly loam soils and cooling ocean influences. The vines are dry grown and carefully managed, producing small yields of intensely flavoured fruit. It’s a vineyard that rewards patience, both in the field and in the cellar, and its wines are made with longevity firmly in mind. The Ribbon Vale Chardonnay is confident but never loud. Vibrant citrus and stone fruit, a subtle lick of oak, and a fine line of acidity that keeps everything fresh and energetic now or after years in the cellar.
The Ribbon Vale Cabernet is all about poise. Dark berries, gentle spice and fine tannins come together in a wine that unfolds slowly, gaining complexity with time. It’s a serious Cabernet with charm, depth and unmistakable Margaret River character. Both stand out offerings and available now:https://www.theaustralianwinecompany.com/collections/moss-wood

The strikingly unique position of Australian wines is that we can produce outstanding quality of the same variety in a number of regions, climates and terrior. Producing wines that provide the expression of the regional character. In no less is this expressed than the Giaconda, Nantua 2022 shiraz. From the clay soils of Beechworth in Victoria this is not the typical fruity Shiraz of South Australia that many European drinkers think of our Shiraz.
Whilst still young, the Giaconda Nantua Shiraz plays a very different game from the classic South Australian Shiraz stereotype. Where many South Australian examples lean into bold ripeness, sweetness of fruit, and upfront power, by contrast, Les Deux is more cool headed and savory with blackberry and continues with black pepper, graphite, sage an rosemary that favours restraint, detail, and tension. Medium bodied with a mouth feel that creeps up on the palate the longer it lingers. European drinkers would struggle to identify this as an Australian shiraz. This is quintessentially the beauty of Australian winemakers, crafting multiple expressions of the same wine variety lies in how each bottle becomes a different accent on the same voice that is shaped by place and imagination.

Whenever we host Australian wine tastings our selections are focused on regional diversity and the strength of varieties on offer. This tasting was no exception and the wines tasted this week delivered in spades, representing some our rock star wine regions - From Margaret River to the Hunter, Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula to the Tamar Valley in Tasmania. As I like to call a 'quiver' of wines that consistently surprised everyone of the range and quality Australia has to offer. Special mentions to Woodlands 'Clementine' (thanks Andrew), Pepper Tree 'Coquun' and stand out of the night, Small Wonder pinot from Tasmania. I'm sure we'll see more interest in time to come.
