Nona. Julia comes from a long generation of Italian women cooking passionately for family and friends. Now continuing the family legacy by bringing you good food

I’m excited to finally share a small project we’ve been working on behind the scenes at Nona!

If you’ve dined with us, you might recognize the little bowls we serve at the start of the evening. Our antique Sicilian formelle, traditionally used to hold jellies and other small preparations.

Together with Michelle Auriel , we created a small line of Nona formelle, inspired by the antique ones we use at the restaurant. She makes everything by hand, true craftsmanship.

So if you’d like a little piece of Nona at home, to serve your own aperitivo or to cook with, now you can 🍋

Ahh Ornella.. a legendary Italian voice. Her voice became the language of all the feelings we could never find words for. The unforgettable Ornella Vanoni left us at 91. She carried our hopes, our melancholy, our secret passions in each note.

Grazie Ornella 🤍

Aahhhhh the beauty of group tables… here we are still setting up, but I just love seeing a table grow fuller and fuller. Towards Christmas we have many more groups coming in, celebrating the holidays and end of year things. There is something so magical about watching a room fill with people who arrive a little cold from outside and slowly melt into the glow of good food, shared stories and that unmistakable fall scenery.

What are the traditions that make your gatherings feel complete? I always love discovering the small details that mean the most to people.

With love,
Julia Nona

and I have been working together for a long time.. She took my first pictures when Nona was still being build, what a joy to look back at these old shots!! I wasn’t always comfortable behind the lens, sometimes still strange to have your picture taken when I’m in the middle of cooking! Grazie mille though for everything, looking forward to our next project dear🤍🤍

Ciao and welcome to all of you who are new here. I’m really glad you found me!

Nona is my very small dining space. Yes, it’s true that there are only four tables, plus five seats at the bar. That means it can sometimes be a bit challenging to find a spot. I know it requires patience, and I truly appreciate that. Thank you for taking the time🤍

I started my journey with a catering company when I was 22. It grew into a lively business with many beautiful moments, but over time I missed something. I missed the feeling of cooking the food that comes from home, from memory, from family kitchens. That is where the idea of Nona began. A place to cook in a more personal way, just a few nights a month, alongside catering.

The plan was to open in May 2020. Then COVID came, and everything shifted. Because of the situation and the limitations around events, I lost my catering company. It was very hard to see something I had worked on for years change so suddenly. The space for Nona remained, but it was still just a small project of love.

Little by little, we continued. Renovating, adjusting, and moving forward where possible. In October 2021, Nona finally opened her doors. It is something I am very proud of. Even with restrictions at the start, we found our way.

Nona was never meant to become a full restaurant. It was simply something close to my heart. And now it is something many of you hold close as well, which means everything to me.

Thank you for being here. For your patience, your support, and your kindness.

Nona is, and will always be, a love letter to my family and where I come from. With love,
Julia Nona

In Sicily, the night between the 1st and 2nd of November belongs to those who are no longer here, but remain part of us. People say that on this night, the murticeddi -the souls of the departed- return quietly to visit their homes, guided by the scent of food and candlelight put out to welcome them back home.

We prepare the table as if they might truly sit down again: a loaf of bread, a glass of wine, maybe some ossa di morto, white almond biscuits shaped like bones, and the colourful frutta martorana, marzipan fruits so vivid they look alive.

These gestures are not of mourning but of love and affection. Sicilian families, the Day of the Dead is a gentle feast of remembrance, a way to keep love alive between the living and those who came before.

In the photo, my family beautifully alive… some in this world, others in the heart.

Today I enjoy a day off, see you on Tuesday again!

In the mornings, I prep, receive deliveries, or head out to do the groceries myself. I love holding the fresh produce in my hands and drawing inspiration from the seasons. I also truly enjoy working with suppliers who share the same values, people who care about quality, tradition, and the stories behind what they grow. That’s why the menu is always changing, and also because I’d go a little crazy cooking the same thing over and over again.

With love,
Julia Nona

Porcini, the true taste of fall. Gathered from damp woods, cooked slowly to reveal their depth and perfume. The kind of ingredient that reminds us why we cook with the seasons.

Porcini, the true taste of fall. Gathered from damp woods, cooked slowly to reveal their depth and perfume. The kind of ingredient that reminds us why we cook with the seasons.

In the tradition of Etna’s cucina, porcini often meet the sea. They might be served alongside grilled swordfish, tossed through pasta with anchovies and lemon, or layered over roasted cod. Earth and sea, a balance we love.

How do you like them best?

With love,
Julia Nona
