My third visit to and the last. Made it just in time for their final service.

Looked back on my first visit in 2020, this is one of the places that shaped how I imagined : regional Chinese food, modern setting, cooking with full of intention, no compromise on flavour.

Simple, direct, and certain. Still something I carry with me.

🌼 Crossing-Bridge Noodles / 菊花过桥米线

Sunny Yunnan just got cold overnight! 🥶
Our Yuanyang rice terrace plans got canceled due to weather condition, so we made a las minute detour from Jianshui to Mengzi: the birthplace of Cross-Bridge Noodles! 🍜

Most locals order a bowl of noodle soup with selectable amount of toppings. We went full in with “Premium Chrysanthemum” version (cost approximately 100 NOK) and it came with 22(!) little side dishes. The noodles were so silky yet springy, the broth was rich and soothing, and a dash of chili oil made it absolutely perfect. So. Good.

Heads up though: the portion is HUGE! If it’s your first time here, maybe share one bowl between two. I could barely finish mine! 😅

Little story about this iconic Mengzi dish:
Legend says a scholar’s wife used to cross a bridge every day to bring him lunch. She kept the broth piping hot and the ingredients separate until serving to keep everything fresh. A story of caring for the loved ones.

Today we tested crispy pork 脆皮烧肉. Our version at Banzha keeps it simple and true: seasoned with salt and five-spice, roasted low and slow, and served with our house-made dipping sauces.

Since we started BBQ lamb skewers it has been my favourite on the menu. Today I prepared a family dinner with these skewers using oven instead of grill. Yum 🤤

Vacation lazy home cooking: make a marinade brine and just toss in whatever ingredients you wanna cook; chicken wings, pork neck, tofu…. And they all come out delicious!!!
