There’s something about the 1st of May that makes you stop and look back…

Winter.

“bloody hell… we made it.” 😅🐴

Because winter for us isn’t just a season…
it’s an endurance test.

• frozen taps
• mud that tries to claim your soul
• headtorches and late-night checks
• riding in the dark (or not riding at all)
• endless layers… that still aren’t enough
• questioning every life choice at least once a week 🤣

It’s showing up when it’s cold, wet, miserable…
when motivation is low
when everything feels harder than it should

And yet…

You still went.
You still mucked out.
You still checked them, fed them, worried about them, cared for them.

That’s not small.

That’s commitment.

And now?

The grass is coming through 🌱
The evenings are lighter 🌅
The mud is mostly retreating (let’s not get cocky… this is the UK 😬🤣)
The horses feel brighter
And so do we.

There’s this quiet feeling of…

“We got through it.”

Not perfectly.
Not gracefully.
But we showed up.

And honestly?

That counts for more than any perfect ride, rosette, or result.

So if you’re standing there this May, coffee in hand, horse in front of you…

Just take a second.

Because you didn’t just survive winter…

You earned this bit 🤍

Can you remember who you were
before the world told you who you should be?

Before the teachers said “be sensible.”
Before the magazines said “be smaller.”
Before the yard politics said “be quieter.”
Before someone you loved said “don’t be so much.”

Before you learnt to shrink your voice.
To apologise for your needs.
To dilute your opinions.
To make yourself easier to digest.

Because I can.

She was loud.
Horse-mad.
Hyperactive
Talkative
Energetic
Chaotic
Sensitive
Deep-feeling.
Wildly imaginative.
Certain she could talk to animals and to ghosts 👻
Certain she would live a life that felt big.

And somewhere along the way, the world tried to sand her down.
Make her practical. Polished. Palatable.

But here’s the thing.

Horses don’t care who you should be.

They respond to who you actually are.

They don’t want the edited version.
They don’t want the socially acceptable version.
They don’t want the over-functioning, over-explaining, people-pleasing version.

They want the regulated, honest, embodied you.

The you before shame.
Before comparison.
Before “not enough” crept in.

And maybe the work isn’t becoming someone new.

Maybe it’s remembering.
Unlearning.
Letting the mud back in.
Letting the laugh be loud again.
Letting the no be firm.
Letting the yes be wholehearted.

You were never too much.
You were just told to be less.

And maybe now?
Now is the time to take up space again.

I don’t care what people think of me. I’m busy.

I’ve got magical s**t to do.

Like whispering to a 500kg animal and asking him to dance with me.
Like standing in a muddy field at sunrise pretending this is ibiza.
Like spending an hour adjusting a saddle pad by three millimetres because it has to be just right.....

I’m busy building partnership.
Busy learning patience.
Busy getting humbled on the daily.
Busy finding peace in a stable that smells like hay and p**s.

And yes.

I’ve got laundry to do as well.

Laundry covered in horse hair.
Laundry that will sometimes need a rewash.....
Laundry that somehow multiplies the moment you turn your back.

But while the world is worrying about opinions and optics and aesthetics…

I’m worrying about feed bills....
About whether that transition felt softer.
About whether he looked at me today like,
“Yeah… you’re my person.”

So no.

I don’t care what people think.

I’ve got magical horse girl chaos to attend to.

And probably a hay net to fill. 🐴✨

Med et stadig mer usikkert verdensbilde mener sauebonde Eivind Haukebøe Vik at Troms må bli bedre rustet til å produsere egen mat. Beitedyr er en viktig del av beredskapen, mener han🌾🥬
