Skjolden Llamas

Skjolden Llamas Skjolden Llamas is a part of the farm business owned and managed by Simon & Monika Page and is located at Gulbrandsgarden, in the village of Skjolden.

We purchased our first two llamas in the summer of 2005 and were so impressed with these gentle and intelligent animals that we bought a further nine the following year, in addition to the first foal being born on the farm.

UPHILL TRAINING.
Easter Friday we took a training tour with Google and Mango up to the mountain lake at Storatjødni. All went well although the boys were rather sceptical about the new terrain. Made it back down to the road just before the weather changed and it started to rain.
Today we woke up to a temperature just above freezing and a thin layer of wet snow. Spring is coming but the weather is still very changeable, we are hoping that it settles down to a warmer and dry period soon as lambing will be starting here in about 8-10 days time.

NEW ARRIVAL.
Seems like Layla, one of the three young females that we bought in last May had planned a little surprise for us and gotten pregnant before we collected her (pregnancies are normally about 11,5 months).
All went well and the new girl, Pippa was a healthy 11,2 kilos and quickly up and looking for milk.
Will be taking a tour down to Lillehammer tomorrow and picking up two more yearlings from Svingvoll on Sunday. We will have to get them trained up for the tours as soon as possible as Layla will now be on maternity leave for most of the season.

FEBRUARY DAYS.
After four weeks of cold, dry weather, the temperature is slowly creeping up towards zero and we have had a few centimeters of fresh snow.
Driving the time between some work, such as cutting firewood and also training the llamas. All of the animals are now getting extra grain feed in addition to sileage to help them through the winter and we are trying to find a solution to stop some of the smarter sheep from stealing from the llamas.

SUNRISE/SUNSET.
After seven weeks absence, the sun was again visible from the farm on 17th January, just a few seconds before it was hidden behind the mountains again. Already by yesterday, the llamas were able to enjoy 20-25 minutes of sunshine.

LIANE.
A walk in the snow up to our cabin at Liane today.
Temperature just above freezing, no more than 25-30cm snow up at 400 meters above sea level and even some direct sunlight. Time goes quickly, last of the sheep were home from here in October and the first will be returning late May.

WINTER.
A short walk further up in the valley. The weather is changing and it has been warmer the past few days and now has started to rain. Winter is certainly not over yet, but we are already looking forward to Spring.

IN & OUT.
We have long, cold winters here and have to feed sileage and hay for at least six months of the year. For most of this time the animals all are fed inside the two barns but as long as the weather is not too wet and miserable, most of them also have access to outside areas. Its colder than being confined inside insulated buildings, but they are well-equipped to deal with the cold and will often lay outside in sub-zero temperatures rather than inside on fresh straw bedding. Also beneficial that they are active and have more space to move around. We spend a lot of time interacting with both the sheep and llamas all of which have their own personalities. Easy to have lots of friends here if your pockets are always full of grain pellets!

SENGABERGET.
Training walks with the llamas every day of the Christmas & New Year holiday. Yesterday we went up to the viewpoint over Skjolden, Sengaberget with Ben & Archie. For anyone visiting Skjolden, a short hike to the viewpoint is well worth the effort.
We have been lucky here with the holiday weather, mostly dry and not too cold with just 8-9 cm of snow falling a few days ago. Good conditions for getting out with the llamas.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR🦙
All the very best to you all from us here at Skjolden Llamas in a rather cold and frosty Skjolden.
A big thank you to all who have been here in the course of 2025 and met the llamas as well as the many organisations and individuals who have worked with us to make everything possible. We are already looking forward to the 2026 season, new opportunities and even more llamas out on the walks!
For anyone in the area and wanting to meet the llamas, we can arrange farm visits and llama walks during the Christmas & New Year holiday, contact us for bookings and available times.
