The Goats' Garden

The Goats' Garden Permaculture site with organic gardens. We strive to live as lightly on the earth as possible and to share our home with others.

The Goats' Garden is a small permaculture-based landholding in a 1920’s farmhouse in southeast Norway, where we keep goats and gardens organically. Our aim is to develop the land and soil along permaculture principles, offer an organic abundance to those who visit us, and make our space available for deep ecology, permaculture, and transition events. For overnight guests, we have organic towels a

nd bath products, ecologically friendly bedding and we use all ecological cleaning products. Our goal is for all of our food to be as lightly traveled as possible, from right at home or local sources. We bake organic bread from local wheat milled in the valley. We are working on developing the site for wellness weekends and other deep ecology and permaculture-based seminars.

Nearly mid-April. Light at 5 am and not dark until after 9 pm now. There was a light frost yesterday morning but they are an anomaly now. High temps averaging around 10. Been mostly dry lately with intermittent days of light to moderate rain. We'll likely get our first 20 degree day within a few weeks.

It has been very cold here since early January. Down to -16 a couple of nights, and little precipitation. A few days ago, it finally snowed enough to go cross-country skiing, and last night, we got about a half meter of snow - that was perfect to ski on today. The sun emerged in the afternoon, and a beautiful magical light switched on. Unfortunately it is short-lived. Above freezing temperatures and rain sweep across southeast Norway tomorrow afternoon.

Winter sunlight unfolding on surrounding hills and fields this morning. Sunup at 8.40 and sundown at 15.40. Sub-freezing temps are consistent now. There was a man with metal detector searching for ancient artefacts in the field two days ago. You can keep coins made after 1650, but must hand over anything older to the archeological authorities. This area was underwater 10,000 years ago and nomadic fishermen would set up seasonal camps on islands (now hilltops). There was a crude iron smelter at far end of field in pic two during the Iron Age, and a key road crossed through the foreground in pics one and two during Mid Ages, increasing chance that coins were inadvertently dropped, according to the man with metal detector (who once found an ancient spearhead).
