Permaculture site with organic gardens. We strive to live as lightly on the earth as possible and to share our home with others.

The Goats' Garden is a small permaculture-based landholding in a 1920’s farmhouse in southeast Norway, where we keep goats and gardens organically. Our aim is to develop the land and soil along permaculture principles, offer an organic abundance to those who visit us, and make our space available for deep ecology, permaculture, and transition events. For overnight guests, we have organic towels and bath products, ecologically friendly bedding and we use all ecological cleaning products. Our goal is for all of our food to be as lightly traveled as possible, from right at home or local sources. We bake organic bread from local wheat milled in the valley. We are working on developing the site for wellness weekends and other deep ecology and permaculture-based seminars.

We picked our pumpkins (mostly Hokkaido) today. Also, a fascinating art exhibition in a nearby forest (entitled, "You'll find me in the woods"), concluded last evening with an illuminated guided wandering at dusk. Very cool. Mystical!

On this harvest moon. The sun slips steadily southward and sets by 7 pm now. Warm almost summery afternoons have persisted through much of September. The harvest continues but is slowing. Tomatoes and cucumbers still in abundance. We're letting the pumpkins stay on the vine as long as possible before picking. Our black walnut tree is finally producing nuts.

Autumn is falling quickly. Sundown by 20.00 now. We have a huge surplus of apples and pears this year, and after filling several large tubs and buckets and making 25 liters of juice and hard c***r, we've invited neighbors to come and pick. Hate to see it go to waste. Kath has been harvesting lentils and all kinds of beans - soy, black, brown and white (which we call Louise's beans because we got them from our dear friend Louise in Oregon USA). Our dehydrator has been running 24 hours a day, drying tomatoes and pear leather.

We lit a candle today for beloved King Harald of Norway, who passed away this morning at the age of 89. He was a kind, caring, wise and inclusive human being. Many considered him Norway's grandfather. Farewell good man!

Kath's cousin Kate Aly, from Eugene, Oregon, USA, paid us a visit this week. You can see the family resemblance.

There's no stopping now. Actually, we had to harvest more potatoes than we would normally do now because of what we think is a badger that has rooted through our potato patches. It doesn't eat the potatoes so we believe he is searching for wasp grubs, allegedly their favorite food. Most of the tomatoes we harvest daily now are being frozen in bags of about 25 each for making sauces in winter.

The harvest begins! The hottest days (34 C) are past and most afternoons now a pleasant 23 degrees. Been a dry summer. Rain forecast for tomorrow. We need it!

Back after six days in Northumbria UK (where Kath was keynote speaker at GroundEd 2026 regenerative education conference) to discover deer had munched the red beet greens. High hopes that our new garden guard will deter further incursions.
