Our youngest son Cade is hard at it making our Bumblebee nesting boxes 🐝 Wool kindly donated by my sister in-law πŸ‘

For the best chance of attracting a queen bumblebee, I'll be trying to mimic an abandoned mouse nest, as this is one of their favorite natural nesting sites.

My mix -

I will be setting up our box with:

50% dry moss
30% dried grass/hay
20% natural wool

Making a loose nest about the size of a grapefruit in the back of the box, leaving an open cavity in the middle for the queen to investigate. This closely resembles the sort of abandoned rodent nest many queens seek out.

🐝 Interesting orchard fact:

Even with a perfect box, occupancy rates can be low because queen bumblebees are notoriously picky about nest sites. Having several boxes in different sheltered locations generally improves the chances.

A queen bumblebee searches for a nesting site in spring, often investigating dozens of holes before choosing one. Once established, a colony may contain anywhere from about 50 to a few hundred bees by summer.

πŸ‘πŸ Did You Know? Bees Are Our Spring Superheroes!πŸ’

Every spring, honey bees get busy pollinating our fruit trees, helping to create the delicious fruit we enjoy in summer.

Interesting Honey Bee Facts:
🐝A single honey bee may visit up to 5,000 flowers in one day. β€’ Bees communicate with each other through a special "waggle dance" to share the location of flowers.
🐝 Around one-third of the food we eat depends on pollinators like bees.
🐝Without bees, many fruit crops including cherries, apricots, apples, peaches, nectarines, and plums would produce far less fruit.
🐝 Honey bees can fly up to 24 km/h while collecting nectar and pollen.

As our orchards burst into blossom, thousands of hardworking bees are helping each flower become the fruit you'll enjoy later in the season. πŸŒΈβž‘οΈπŸ’

Next time you see a bee buzzing around a blossom, remember it's doing one of nature's most important jobs!

πŸπŸ’› Thank you, bees!

Happy first day of Spring everyone 🌸🌸🌸

πŸ‘ Interesting fruit facts for Spring:

❄️ Winter cold helps-but spring frost hurts - Dormant buds can tolerate freezing temperatures, but once buds swell and flowers open, they become highly vulnerable to frost damage.

🌸 A flower can look healthy after a frost and still be damaged inside. That's why many orchards use frost protection systems, such as windmills, frost pots and over-tree sprinklers.

πŸ’§ Fun Fact... Over-tree sprinklers form a protective layer of ice that helps keep flower tissues near 0Β°C rather than dropping into more damaging minus temperatures. Like it's own little igloo 🧊

🐝 Pollination isn't one-size-fits-all. Some fruit varieties can pollinate themselves, while others require cross pollination from a compatible fruit variety flowering at the same time to achieve good fruit set. This is the important job of our bees ✨

πŸ’ Every piece of fruit starts with a successful pollination event. The better the pollination, the greater the potential for good fruit size, shape, and yield.

🌞 Here's to the sun shining and the blossoms blooming πŸ’–
