We are harvesting the sun!! After nearly a year of planning and with help from the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority, Jackson White and Auric, we have a solar and battery system that will generate/store enough energy for the main hub of our farm - 6 houses, electric fences, workshop and woolshed. There are tweaks to be made and we are still learning how to make the most of the system but it is exciting for us to have a “long talked about” project completed. Real and enduring - moving the wethers into the Upper Rakaia Valley is a 150 year station tradition, that always takes place in June. They will graze and grow wool until they are mustered back home for shearing in November. It is a tribute to the hardy merino breed that they thrive and survive in the mountains - a bit like many of the hardy people that live and work in this environment. Shout out to high country shepherds and musterers and their faithful dogs 👏🏻👏🏻

Finally our last day of the autumn muster is done and dusted with the last mob off the hill and through the gate. The autumn muster is one of the highlights on our farming calendar. With challenging weather this year, we have had to call a break before the final day of mustering. However the psych was high during time in the hills. Long days, big climbs, a bit of snow and plenty of wind made for some good adventure and deep sleeps at night. We’ve got most of the merinos down - just one more day once the weather clears. Thanks to all who helped, especially 4 month old Isabelle, who has started her mustering career earlier than most😊.
