Hewson Farms is nestled in the heart of Mid Canterbury, we are a family run farm. Our property is fully irrigated by large centre pivot and lateral Irrigators allowing us to operate a large-scale arable and vegetable cropping operation. A sustainable rotation is focused around 25% of our land in Potatoes and Onions each year, with the remainder in wheat, barley, ryegrass, beetroot , carrot seed a

nd r**e seed. During the winter Months we fatten lambs each year on contract. Hewson Farms owns and operates 4 truck and trailer units, these cart most of the produce except the potatoes which is contracted out. On the corner of the farm we have four distinctive half-round tunnel-shaped sheds so we are able to store a total of 23,000 tonnes of potatoes.

Hewson Farms in mid-Canterbury shows how irrigated cropping faces growing pressure from extreme weather, rising costs and uncertain returns for arable farmers like Ross Hewson.

Heavy rain, hail and unpredictable harvest windows have forced growers to use more machinery, rely on neighbours and face rising input costs that are not matched by returns, with Ross warning the cropping sector needs better value in the supply chain to remain viable long-term.

Translation- Agrifoto back to New Zealand last month.At the well-known arable farm Hewson Farms, clover was harvested using four Claas Lexion 780 combines 🦾. All of them were equipped with a MacDon header, which is absolutely essential for this crop
