Yesterday we met Cristina, visiting us from Nelson, wearing beautiful Palestinian tatreez that she had stitched herself. As we got talking, she shared her husband’s family story with us.
His grandparents left Bethlehem for Chile around 1920, taking their Palestinian food and traditions with them. They couldn’t always find the same spices, so they adapted with what they had.
And now, more than 100 years and four generations later, their children are still eating Palestinian food, learning the traditional recipes and playing tawle. ❤️
From Bethlehem, to Chile, to Nelson and now our little table at Zaitoon. May our food and culture forever travel with us. Thank you Cristina for sharing your family’s story.
