The next vintage is arriving with the right kind of attention.

James Suckling has awarded our Babich Irongate Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2025 90 points.

Forty vintages in, Irongate Chardonnay is still earning its place.

Grown at our flagship Irongate Vineyard in Gimblett Gravels, this limited release carries plenty of history, but it’s not here to lean on the past.

Peach, cashew, apple and brioche. Rich, focused and built to last, with a fine line of acidity keeping everything in check.

Auckland W**emaker Craig Hoskin has been crafting w**e with Babich for nearly two decades, on and off. Which, around here, counts as both experience and excellent decision-making.

He was once known for cycling a 60km round trip to work and starting at the crack of dawn. These days, the lycra has been retired in favour of more gentlemanly hours.

Craig keeps the Auckland w**ery moving: checking in with the team, sorting the day’s surprises, planning w**e flows, blending, and making sure the good stuff gets where it needs to go.

Calm hands, a good head, and no shortage of opinions.

A few behind-the-scenes moments from Making W**e in Secret.

The story begins with Joe Babich, three barrels, and a quiet belief that he was onto something.

That “something” became Irongate Chardonnay. And this year, it reached its 40th vintage.

Even forty years later, it’s still proving him right.

Now, with the 2025 vintage newly released, one of the most iconic bottles in our portfolio is entering its next chapter, still shaped by that same unconventional spirit.

Our Headwaters Vineyard is a pretty special patch of Marlborough. And not just because it’s where we grow the grapes for our Family Estates range of organic w**es.

As our Marlborough Area Viticulturist David Bullivant puts it, growing grapes organically is hugely rewarding, but there’s not much room for error.

English summers are better with Babich. Especially when there’s fresh Dorset seafood involved.

For our annual Babich on the Beach with Berkmann W**e Cellars, we brought together 12 trade partners and prospective customers from bars and restaurants across the South of England for a day in Mudeford.

The idea is simple: thank those who already support Babich and give some new faces the chance to get to know us. Away from busy venues and the usual sales meeting, there’s time to taste more of the range, talk w**e and get to know Babich a little better.

There was a Babich masterclass and tasting, locally caught seafood, a lesson from the people who fish the Dorset coast, and a ferry ride across to the beach for a picnic with a few more Babich w**es in tow.

A tough day at the office, but somebody had to do it.

Pinot Noir tends to inspire strong opinions among w**emakers.

Ask Senior W**emaker Adam Hazeldine and he’ll describe it in three words: personality, charm and tension. Ask Auckland W**emaker Craig Hoskin and you’ll get a different answer: seductive, sophisticated and sensitive.

Perhaps that’s fitting. Pinot Noir has always been a w**e that reveals something different to everyone who spends time with it.

Our Babich Marlborough Pinot Noir 2024 is bright and expressive today, showing cherry fruit, red berries and a gentle thread of spice. Beneath that generosity sit the structure and balance, too. W**e Enthusiast recently gave it 91 points and a Best Buy. Not a bad endorsement for a varietal that inspires so many opinions.

Joe Babich had a fairly straightforward approach to w**emaking: respect what works, but never be afraid to try something different.

In the 1980s, that meant looking to French w**emaking techniques for inspiration and secretly experimenting with three barrels of Chardonnay after hours. The resulting w**e went on to win a gold medal and trophy – and shaped what would become our Irongate range.

Two decades later, that same curiosity took Joe to Marlborough, where he set out to learn about organic w**egrowing the best way he knew how: by doing it. That experiment grew into Headwaters Vineyard, which remains organically certified today.

Different decades, different ideas, same Joe.

This 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle has been part of the Babich family story for quite some time. Although, technically, it’s been two Beetles.

Believe it or not, this duck-egg blue beauty is a bit of a Frankenstein – one Beetle that had been in the family for decades, and an identical model sourced to help bring it back to life.

André Babich spent the better part of a decade restoring it, piece by piece, with his father Joe Babich. Why put quite that much time into an old VW?

For International Cabernet Day, we’re opening the Babich Irongate Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Merlot Franc, a w**e that’s been part of the family story since 1987.

Cabernet Sauvignon has a fairly tidy origin story, as grapes go. In the 1990s, DNA testing confirmed what its name had been quietly hinting at all along: Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc are its parents.

A red grape and a white grape, both from Bordeaux. W**e has always had a way of keeping families interesting.

For our Irongate red blend, Cabernet brings the backbone. Merlot brings the charm. Franc brings the lift. Hawke’s Bay brings the warmth. And James Suckling brings the kudos, giving the 2018 vintage 92 points, which is a rather nice thing to bring to the table too.

Nearly forty years on, it still has plenty to say. And we’d wager it’ll be here for the next forty, and the forty after that too.
