The early bird catches the 🪱

To get the early Spring blooms like Snapdragons, Campanula, Larkspur, Bells of Ireland and Godetia we need to plant their seedlings now in June here on the farmlet.

It was a cracker of an afternoon today - what I call a good South Island winter’s day - big blue skies, high sun and a cool breeze (actually think I might even have a bit of a sunny glow on tonight? 🔥 🔥).

Am now horizontal with a well earned cuppa!

There’s still plenty more to get into the ground over the next couple of weeks, but today was a great start to our June planting programme! 💪🏻 💪🏻

A typical June field walk:

🌱 Checking the babies.
☕️ Having a coffee.
🌱 Some are a bit bigger!
🌱 LOTS of seedlings…
🌱 First of the poppies

May has so much going on that it sometimes feels like you’ve been thrown around in a washing machine!

At the beginning of the month you have loads of plants calling ‘enough!’ and it’s time to start pulling out spent blooms to get ready for the spring plantings.

On the other side there are a bazillion seeds being sown, seedlings being pricked out and then hardened off ready for planting as soon as those beds get clear.

THEN, smack in the middle of all that seasonal change is Mother’s Day and the outpouring of love to all the mums out there, which involves bouquets, gifts and new flowery experiences here on the farmlet now too!

Phew, just writing it all down was exhausting!!

I’m an artist…

This artist has found her place and it’s amongst flowers.

All things flowers - growing, tending, harvesting, curating, arranging, talking about, drawing, teaching and sharing them too.

Despite a really difficult ‘Summer’ we’ve been pulling up some huge dahlia crowns this week. Such a relief when we had sooooo much rain in January/February. I was really worried we might lose a lot to rot. So, even though we didn’t have as many blooms as we’d have liked this season, the plants were busy underground producing lots of tubers below decks instead! ☺️

Anyhoo, on a side note, I can never get over how lumpy, bumpy and generally unattractive dahlia tubers are underground and yet they produce such gorgeous blooms each summer - strange but true!

Here we Gooooooooo! 🏃🏻‍♀️ 🏃🏻‍♀️

The annual big dahlia tuber dig has begun here on the farmlet.

We have almost 500 tuber crowns to lift, sort, label, pack, and put into storage for winter.

And with the nasty wet weather forecast for next week we need to crack on with it THIS week!!

If only we could do this job as quickly as the timelapse runs!!
😆😆

PS: once you’ve watched us running around like ninnies a few times check out the cloud action above - it’s very swirly cool!

When I think about it, I realise I’ve spent a lot of my adult life doing the things I ‘should’ rather than following my own path.

Now, as a flower farmer/florist/creative I’m taking the learnings from all of those ‘shoulds’ to follow my own star ✨

“Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.”
