Donald's Farm is delighted to welcome our new Farm Manager, Carlos, along with his wife Ellen and their three children to the farm community.

It has been a busy start to the season, with significant progress already being made on farm development projects, including the laneway upgrade and fencing improvements.

Originally from Peru, Carlos has called New Zealand home for many years and brings a wealth of farming knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to the role.

We are excited to have Carlos and his family as part of Donald's Farm and look forward to the season ahead. šŸšœšŸ„šŸŒ±

Students from Te Hāikura a Kiwa have been out on farm learning all about health and safety in a real working environment.

They spent the day identifying common farm hazards and discussing practical ways to minimise or eliminate risk. This included looking at slippery surfaces, electric fences, ponds, animals, and machinery, and understanding how each of these can be managed safely.

A great hands-on learning experience that builds awareness and confidence in staying safe on farm.

We now have a defibrillator installed at the farm dairy at Donald’s Farm.

This is an important addition to our on-farm safety setup and is also available for use by members of the wider community should it ever be needed in an emergency.

Having this in place means faster access to lifesaving equipment when every second counts.

The Intro to Agriculture students recently teamed up with the Conservation Volunteers NZ for a hands-on day at Donald’s Farm, moving young trees from the farm nursery out to the back paddocks in preparation for planting.

It was a great chance for students to get practical experience, working alongside experienced volunteers and learning what goes into large-scale planting and land restoration work.

With a big planting day coming up on Friday, these trees are now ready for the next stage of their journey, helping to build shelter, improve biodiversity, and support long-term sustainability on the farm.

Great work from everyone involved.

We are super excited to be running our calf club sessions again this year, with plans to kick off at the end of July.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a limited number of local children to get hands-on experience with rearing a calf, learning responsibility, building confidence, and spending time on the farm.

The photo below is of last year’s calves — and we can already tell this season is going to be just as cute! šŸ®šŸ’›

Keep an eye on our page for more details and how to get involved.

Alongside the race development, the fencing contractors have been hard at work too, with the posts and wire arriving for the new fencing out the back of the farm.

These improvements will make moving stock and vehicles around the farm safer, smoother, and more efficient for everyone involved šŸ„šŸ‘Œ

Plenty happening behind the scenes and it’s great to see the progress coming together!

Progress is rolling on at Donald’s Farm! The contractors have been on farm for over a week now and the new race development is really starting to take shape.

Plenty of hard work, machinery, and long days are going into making improvements that will benefit the farm for years to come.

Safe to say the cows will be travelling in style soon šŸ„

Last week was all go on the farm 🚜

The students did an awesome job clearing a huge woodpile ready for the new race, while fencing work continued out the back near the wetland planting area.

Great to see so much progress happening across the farm.

It was great to have the horticulture students from Te Haikura a Kiwa (formerly James Cook High) out on the farm this week.

The students checked on the trees they had previously planted, explored the native forest, and got stuck in helping remove lane fencing as part of our new farm development.

There is something special about seeing young people reconnect with the land and be part of projects that will continue to grow for years to come. We appreciate all the hard work and enthusiasm they brought with them for the day šŸ‘

Donald’s Farm was also incredibly fortunate last week to host a large group from Conservation Volunteers New Zealand.

The team spent the day planting trees, shrubs and grasses along the stream, contributing to important restoration work in and around our waterways. Their focus on growing, nurturing and planting native species plays a vital role in helping restore and protect our natural environment.

It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout and hands-on impact across the property. A big thank you to everyone involved for their energy, commitment and care for the land.
