Bubble plates or a fixed reflux column? Which is best.

So i ran a simple test yesterday and was suprised what i got. Simply put, a packed reflux column is more efficient. I was able to run the still at full temp and not get any vapour come up through the still head. I think the reason is because there is a linear temperature differential compared to a stepped function for the bubble plates. It meant i was able to run the still hotter, and get more throughput at the business end.

The reflux column i used was is a 0.5 meter su304 pipe stuffed with stainless steel kitchen scrubbers partitioned by 200 mesh copper gauze. I used a three bubble plate setup for comparison and take off for the entire run was about 65%abv for both.

50ml cuts.
So another feature of this design, is you can easily separate your heads and tails into 50ml cuts. Essentially, get the boiler to steady state, open the oulet valve, drain, and close. The internal collector holds about 50ml. Again wait for the still go steady state, and open the valve. Another 50ml collected. ect.
I don't know if a regular design still can do this, but it's cool to separate each section and know what you want to keep.

Today, testing a new feature of our our still design where we are able to boil the wort in continuous reflux in a completely sealed environment. Nothing is wasted or escapes. The heat going in is taken out by the heat exchanger while the acids and alcohol mix and cook, for esterfication.
We also discovered a descent water pump (340 w) is sufficient to cool the still using only one heat exchanger.
