Finally after 8 months storage, cut and ate my last crown pumpkin. These truly are the best keeping pumpkins I grow. It was full of well developed seed. Each year I plant seed I have saved from the best pumpkins from previous years. This year I have plants in the ground from seed save in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

Garlic harvest well under way. Despite a very wet spring a pleasing result with the Te Anau Turbans stealing the show for size, while the unknown softneck continue to prove reliable even when growing conditions are not optimum. I will save most of the turbans to regrow next season.

Almost harvest time for the garlic. A few test pulls of the Te Anau Turbans which seem to have matured a little before the "unknown" softneck. Planted mid May a fairly bad year for garlic rust, but fortunately it hit late in spring during an exceptionally wet October. Maybe 2 weeks until harvesting the hardneck, 4 weeks for the softneck and after hanging and curing we will have garlic for sale later in January.

What a difference 6 weeks and a whole lot of humid rain can make...late september the garlic was looking lovely amd green and healthy. Early november and a rainy humid month, and the alium rust has started to take hold.😭 But fear not, it is something we organic farmers have to live with. No heavy applications of fungicides, just live with it. The apple cider vinegar and baking soda sprays slowed it down a bit and the bulbs are starting to form. Seaweed tea and fish soup weekly for the next month will secure a result.
