It was a real privilege to welcome 14 participants from Deaf Aotearoa, together with two NZSL interpreters, for our Steady Energy cooking class at Auckland Deaf Society.
The humour began almost immediately. When we introduced G as a professional chef with more than 40 yearsโ experience working around the world, the questions came quickly: โIs he a New Zealand MasterChef?โ
G replied, โIโll be your MasterChef for the afternoon!โ ๐
The class explored how fibre, protein, quality carbohydrates and healthy fats can work together to support blood sugar metabolism, satisfaction and steadier energy.
We made Chia Bircher Muesli with berry chia jam, Indian mung bean pancakes with turmeric coconut chutney and finished with the grand finale: creating individual Steady Energy Mexican bowls. Every bowl was unique, colourful and absolutely beautiful.
We adapted the class with a slower pace, clear visual demonstrations, written information, hands-on interaction and plenty of pauses for interpretation.
What brought the afternoon to life was the warmth, engagement, personality and humour in the room. We also came away with enormous appreciation for the patience, concentration and effort required of the interpreters. Every question, conversation and small interaction needed to be interpreted and they made it all flow so naturally.
Thank you to Deaf Aotearoa for trusting us with this experience, and to everyone who participated so enthusiastically. We learnt a great deal from you too.
โI learnt how to create a steady energy bowl full of flavour, fibre and nutrition.โ
Never say never to another class together!
