Relationships are everything.

One theme that emerged repeatedly while interviewing Tim and Richard of Altezano Brothers was an emphasis on the importance of people.

Whether that is sourcing and the long-term grower relationships in Latin America or the someone ordering an espresso, their approach centred around quality and consistency has built an enduring business.

This interview forms part of our Behind the Counter series, exploring the people, businesses and ideas shaping hospitality across Aotearoa.

Sugarcane packaging starts with a by-product.

Bagasse is the fibrous material left after sugarcane juice is extracted. Rather than being discarded, it can be moulded into durable food packaging suitable for takeaway and foodservice applications.

We offer a range of sugarcane products, including trays, plates, bowls and coffee cup lids, all:

šŸŽ‹ Made from reclaimed sugarcane fibre
šŸ Certified industrially compostable to AS 4736 and ASTM D6400
šŸ” Certified home compostable to AS 5810
🧪 Lab tested for no intentionally added PFAS

Sugarcane packaging is particularly well suited to systems where food scraps and compostable packaging can be collected together through organics services or managed through home composting.

What are your coffee cups made of?

Research published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials: Plastics found that elevated temperatures can accelerate surface degradation and microplastic release in PE-coated paper cups.

As more packaging enters the market, material choice—and verification—matters.

🌐 Our coffee cups are certified compostable to the AS 4736, EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 standards for industrial composting, verified by DIN CERTCO and BPI.

If you’re reviewing your current cup and lid setup, we’re happy to share what works in practice—across materials, compliance, and end-of-life outcomes. Email [email protected].

Most disposable coffee cup and takeaway container lids are made from polypropylene (PP, #5 plastic), largely due to cost and durability.

But research shows that when exposed to heat and repeated use, PP can degrade—releasing micro- and nanoplastic particles. These particles can also adsorb (carry) chemicals from their surrounding environment.

Material choice matters—especially for packaging designed for hot liquids.

šŸ›¢ļø PP is derived from petrochemicals (fossil fuels).

🌽 Our bioplastic cup lids are made from crystallised PLA (CPLA). Heat and pressure are applied to improve heat resistance, making them suitable for hot drinks. They are certified industrially compostable to EN 13432 and ASTM D6400, verified by DIN CERTCO.

šŸŽ‹ Our sugarcane lids are certified home compostable to AS 5810, aligned with the OK compost HOME programme.

🌽 Our bioplastic PLA container lids are certified to AS 4736 and EN 13432.

There’s a lot of noise right now around ā€œwhich material is best.ā€

What we’re increasingly seeing is organisations aren’t asking ā€œWhat’s the right decision across carbon, cost, compliance, and end-of-life?". Increasingly, procurement decisions are being shaped by:

– Scope 3 emissions targets
– procurement and reporting requirements
– the need for commercially viable outcomes

As a supplier, our role is to support better decision-making.

We participate in EcoVadis to provide transparency across our ESG performance, and as a Toitū Climate Positive organisation to measure and reduce our emissions.

Together, these frameworks support our customers in making informed procurement decisions—particularly where Scope 3 emissions and reporting are a factor.

Because with increasing accountability, organisations must askā“ ā€œWhat does that decision represent across our supply chain?ā€

If you’re working through packaging decisions tied to Scope 3 or ESG, we’re always open to sharing how we approach this. Email [email protected]
