OLLERENSHAW SPUD DIG 2026/2027
The Ollerenshaw Spud Dig has been an annual event at the South Otago Town & Country Club since 1993. Did you know that we were the first Chartered Club to run a Spud dig competition?
Seed spuds are available from this weekend for members to grow in whatever medium, and in whatever way they wish. Whether you’re from Balclutha, Milton, Owaka, Clinton, or any surrounding areas, all members are welcome to participate. The best part is, we'll travel to you to dig it up!

Juniors, up to the age of 16, and whose parents are members are welcome to enter too. There's a separate prize for the Junior with the heaviest shaw.
Entry fee is $5.00 per seed, which can be paid at the bar when you register and fill in your entry form.
All entrants will be rung by the Spud Dig Committee one to two weeks prior to the Digging day, to check on your Spud, and to hopefully sign you up to join in the fun of the Digging Day crew!
Digging Day for 2027 is to be held on a Saturday in March (yet to be confirmed). It's an absolutely superb day out and we'd encourage any member with or without a Spud to be a part of it.
On the day of the dig, those wanting to be part of the Digging crew will be balloted into cars (with a designated driver) to travel around the various members’ gardens, digging up their bounty and enjoying the hospitality that these GC's (Good countrymen 😁) provide for you hard working diggers!
If you have a Spud being dug, you'll be asked to put out a few refreshments (non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, and maybe some nibbles) for those digging up your shaw. Digging is a pretty tough gig, after all!
When the digging crews have been around and dug their allotted shaw's, on return to the Club each entry will be carefully weighed and recorded, ready for the prizegiving and celebrations - including the grand finale of the 'Spud Auction'!
Seeds are available as of this weekend (10 October), so why not get amongst this brilliant T&C tradition, and get ya tater in the ground!
