Happy International Chardonnay Day!

At Akarua, Chardonnay is our expression of Te Ao — the world of light.
From Bannockburn, Central Otago: cool nights, intense sunlight, schist soils. A demanding place that shapes a precise, fresh Chardonnay.
In the glass: stone fruits (peach, nectarine, pear), citrus blossom freshness, fine mineral tension, subtle texture from oak and amphora.

Thirty years after the first vines were planted, our Chardonnay is refined into balance and clarity.

Bright. Fresh. True to place.
Akarua Chardonnay.

Please drink responsibly.

Here, the vines don't adapt to the climate.
They confront it.
The 2026 season started with a false spring — followed by frosts, instability, and pressure. The vines had no choice but to push through, slowly, on their own terms.
Then March arrived.
Warmer days. Cool nights. Renewed light.
Ripening slowed down, and in that slowness — complexity built.
Through April, every grape was hand-harvested.
Fresh. Taut. Precise.
Schist soils. Extreme light. Endless patience.
This is what shapes an Akarua vintage.
2026 is already telling its story.

Akarua The Siren Pinot Noir 2023 received an outstanding score of 96/100.

Created from a meticulous selection of hand‑harvested lots from our Cairnmuir Road vineyard in Central Otago, The Siren embodies the most focused and elevated expression of Akarua Pinot Noir.
Layered and complex, it unfolds with notes of spice, dark fruit and finely integrated oak. The palate is structured and poised, carried by silky tannins and a long, elegant finish.

A Pinot Noir of depth and precision, built to evolve beautifully with time.
Thank you to Cameron J Douglas for this recognition.

30 years ago, Akarua planted its first vines in Bannockburn.
A still wild land in the heart of Central Otago, where only visionary pioneers dared to venture.
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: two founding parcels, two varieties that would give the estate its name, Akarua, meaning “two vines” in Māori.
Since that first gesture, we have never stopped exploring, challenging the elements, and carrying forward the bold intuition that shaped who we are.

This anniversary was celebrated with those who walk this path with us: a Pioneer Party, paying tribute to vision, courage, and the first stones of a story that is only just beginning.

Akarua Pinot Noir 2023 was selected by Wine Spectator as one of "Smart Buys in New Zealand Pinot Noir. » by MaryAnn Worobiec's.

More than just a feature, this selection distinguishes wines that offer one of the most accurate and remarkable expressions of their origin.

From the sunny terroirs of Bannockburn, this Pinot Noir reveals layers of black fruit, delicate spices, and a vibrant energy that captures the purity and character of Central Otago.
We are honored to see Akarua featured among New Zealand's top wines.

Thank you to MaryAnn Worobiec and Wine Spectator for this recognition.
