💦 Why Aqua-Walker Work Is More Than Just a Splash About

An aqua-walker combines the benefits of walking exercise with the resistance and support of water — making it a valuable tool for both rehabilitation and conditioning.

For horses returning from injury, the buoyancy of water helps reduce concussion on joints and soft tissues while still allowing controlled movement. For horses in work, the water’s resistance can help build strength, improve fitness and encourage better muscle use without adding extra strain.

Aqua-walker sessions may help with:

Building topline and hindquarter strength
Supporting tendon and ligament rehabilitation
Improving range of motion and mobility
Developing fitness with reduced impact
Aiding recovery after demanding training or racing
Keeping horses mentally fresh with variety in their routine

Compared with swimming, aqua-walker exercise permits a controlled, functional walking gait with consistent limb loading and reduced concussive forces. This is advantageous for rehabilitation programmes requiring gradual reintroduction of weight-bearing activity, while supporting joint mobility, muscular activation and neuromuscular coordination. In contrast to aqua-treadmill exercise, the aqua-walker allows the horse to walk without a moving belt, while water resistance provides a variable workload around the limbs, thus providing a different exercise stimulus.

Because sometimes the road back to stronger starts with getting their feet wet. 🐴💧

Whilst it is getting chillier this is definitely one of my favourite times of the year. The horses are loving their work on the aqua-walker and the days are still nice enough for them to all have time out in the paddocks. And the colours around the farm are spectacular
