Akaroa Salmon New Zealand Raising the finest King Salmon here in Akaroa since 1985

For nearly 40 years Akaroa King Salmon have been perfecting how to grow the finest King Salmon in the world without feeding them antibiotics, hormones, GMO's or using any pesticides - in the smallest ocean-run King Salmon farm that there is. Our tīpuna were the first fishers of the harbour and we continue their work as a partnership founded on intergenerational sustainability with the Bates Famil

y, Ngati Porou and Ōnuku Runanga ( the mana moana of Akaroa Harbour )
This is what we stand for — raising craft salmon, and doing it in a way that New Zealand can be proud of.

We sent some of our salmon to the mighty north last month.

Incredibly proud to support Tohunga Tūmau - Puanga Matariki Dinner in Whangārei, celebrating Aotearoa's finest Māori food and chefs. Hosted by Chef Rewi Spraggon, and featuring faces such as Peter Gordon, Rex Morgan, Joe McLeod, Tama & Liam Salive, Kasey & Kārena Bird, and Maia Atvars.
Plus we can never forget the lovely Nancye Pirini, who served a special 'Stef the Māori' salmon course, with hāngī chilli parmesan urenika, yuzu hollandaise, pickled fennel, Mandy's horseradish salsa verde, and karengo crisp.
Congrats as well to Nukutai Rupene on receiving the Rangatahi Tūmau Award at this year's hākari. It's proof of the talent and mahi from our rangatahi, with Nukutai awarded honours in the trainee chef of the year competition earlier this year at Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Calling all Banks Peninsula locals, past employees, and aspiring historians. We need your help!

Do you have any old photos or stories from our 40 years of salmon farming in Akaroa Harbour?

As part of our 40th anniversary, we're putting together a collection of old photos, poems, stories, videos and journal entries. So please reach out with any information you've collected since 1985. Whether it's stories of escaped fish, kiwi ingenuity, laughs with Tom or Duncan, or a grainy old polaroid of our pens, we'd love to see it.

As a thank you, we'll give a couple of shop vouchers to our favourite responses.

Comment below, message us directly, or email [email protected] with anything you can dig up.

Two weeks ago, the inaugural MICHELIN Guide came to New Zealand, recognising outstanding restaurants around our country.

A massive congratulations to Ahi and INATI, both receiving a Michelin star.

Bib Gourmands to ODEON Restaurant, ROCA, Earl, The Monday Room and Soul Quarter.

Michelin Select recognition for Origine, Bessie, Jervois Steak House, Hugo, Miro, Boulcott Street Bistro and Charley Noble.

We're lucky enough to supply each of these incredible kitchens.

The dish below was part of a recent Ahi. X INATI collab here in Christchurch. Two Michelin-starred restaurants combining for an evening of seriously good food.

Find the full 2026 Michelin Guide online and book a table this winter.

📺 Did you catch us on on Sunday night?

Colin and Manu got fully immersed in Akaroa with Black Cat Cruises before cooking a couple of our fresh fillets out of their famous caravan.

React to vote for which you would rather try!

❤️ for Colin's poached salmon in a cider broth, or
👍 for Manu's seared sesame salmon

Catch episode 4 of TVNZ’s Off the Grid with Colin and Manu (trust us, it's hilarious) on TVNZ+.

We're proud to support the incredible work of the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust.

And last month things got delicious.

Moon Under Water hosted a full kitchen takeover with chef Nik and the team serving up salmon dishes to more than 150 guests. The night sold out, and together we raised over $4,000 for BPCT's conservation mahi across Banks Peninsula.

It's a small contribution toward something much bigger. The trust works tirelessly to eradicate pests, restore natural habitats, and protect the biodiversity that makes this place so special. And it's working. The last possum was recently removed from Kaitorete Spit.

We also supply BPCT with salmon heads and frames for their pest trapping programme - a practical way we can contribute beyond fundraising. Turns out pests seem to love our salmon almost as much as our customers.

Ngā mihi to the whole BPCT team, and to Moon Under Water for opening their doors so generously.

Great to see the next generation of chefs on Monday.

Our very own Nik was over at Ara Institute of Canterbury judging at the Waitaha Young Chef Championship. Each of the trainee chefs was challenged to cook a piece of our salmon, putting their skills to the test.

Congrats to Olivia Wormald, winner of the Trainee Chef of the Year — our sponsored category — and to Ellouise Day from OGB who took out the overall title and is heading to the NZ Championships with help from the NZChefs Association.

Thanks to Mark and the Ara team for a day of great food and inspiring talent.
