Morgans Valley

Morgans Valley Morgans Valley lies within Heathcote Valley, a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. Yet it was one of the first parts of Christchurch to be settled. From J. S.

Not one Christchurch citizen in a thousand could tell you much about Morgans Valley. It is one of the sunniest, prettiest and most tranquil spots imaginable; and it is barely 9 kilometers from Cathedral Square. The reason for its obscurity is that Morgans Valley has for a long period been privately owned and not signposted in any way. An off shoot of Heathcote Valley, access to it was by a private

driveway near the Heathcote RSA Hall. Scott's homestead the drive led back through a white double gate and into a large warm gully backing into the south-east corner of Heathcote Valley. From out on the flat it was easily recognisable because of its large red farm buildings clustered under massive old bluegums. However, the valley has now been opened up by subdivision and is entering into a new and much more public phase in its history. Name: The Valley took its name from Captain William Morgan, who arrived at Lyttelton on 28 August 1851 in command of the Canterbury Association's eleventh emigrant ship, the barque Bangalore, carrying 160 passengers. He liked what he saw of the settlement so much that he at once took up 50 acres east of the Bridle Path, returned to England and, in 1855, brought out his wife and children as immigrants in the New Era.

[After William Morgan died the farm was purchased by Richard May Morten, and following this, John Flinders Scott.] As the Scott family had owned the valley for about 90 years and done so much to beautify it with tree planting and shelter belts, it was granted naming rights. While the Valley they live in is still called Morgans Valley, the new 126.1-hectare reserve [previously owned by the Scotts is called the Scotts Valley Reserve and the main walking track through it, linking the Heathcote Quarry Park with the Bridle Path and the steep trail up to Castle Rock, is the Scotts Valley Track. Aspect: Augmented by a useful network of walking tracks, this whole area with its dramatic skyline, rock faces, cliff lines and unencumbered open spaces is a priceless asset for hill walkers, rock climbers, geologists and botanists. The Morgans Valley subdivision: Undertaken by the McFarlane Group property developers, [the subdivision] was completed in 2003 and consists of 67 sections. Many of these are now built on and this development, with its sheltered north-west outlook and splendid views of Christchurch and the Southern Alps, is regarded as one of the best residential localities in the city.

On Saturday 18 May, a fantastic group of volunteers turned out for the planting afternoon in Morgans Valley.

In just a couple of hours we managed to plant over 400 native trees.

Thank you to the amazing volunteers (of all ages!) for their energy, interest in restoring native bush and community spirit.

Hi everyone,

Now the rain has softened the ground we are holding a planting afternoon this Saturday 17 May at 12.30 - 3.00pm

We welcome your help again this year if you can make it, even just for an hour. And if you aren't up to planting, please come along and have a cuppa and see what we are up to.

Bring: Gardening gloves, spade or grubber, sturdy shoes. Some spare tools available.
Where: Top of Morgans Valley, at the roundabout, turn left and go through the gate and follow the accessway towards the Water Tank.

We are planting the area outlined below in yellow. Part of this area is currently mowed by the CCC and should be easier planting than the previous areas. Parking is available just through the gate where the X is on the photo below. If the weather is wet, we will hold the planting day on Sunday at the same time. Thank you.

Happy New Year everyone.

A vigilant neighbour has just advised with the high winds there is now a large tree in the median strip down, blocking the road into Morgans Valley. They have advised the council.
Take care out there.

Hi everyone, a courtesy message (on behalf of Rachel Wells) to let you know that tomorrow, Wednesday 4 December we have approximately 24 high school students coming to do volunteer work in Morgans Valley.

The boys are helping in the native planting areas doing w**d releasing so will be up on the hills where we have previously planted.

Rest assured they will be fully supervised by teachers!

An exciting post and photo from local resident Lauren McCauley.

A tui visited our garden at 23B Morgans Valley today! We saw it a few times throughout the day, stopping by to feed on the nectar in the flax flowers. Keep and eye and an ear out for it.

Tui are beautiful birds and it’s fantastic to have one visit. Hopefully with all of the plantings in the valley we will have tui living here permanently one day!
