Wine vs Port đŸ·

Same family. Very different personalities.

Here’s the simple version:

Wine gets all its alcohol naturally through fermentation.

Yeast eats the grape sugars → creates alcohol → done.

Port takes things one step further.

During fermentation, we add a grape spirit (fortification), which:

đŸ· stops the fermentation early

đŸ· keeps some natural sweetness in the wine

đŸ· and lifts the alcohol content

That’s why Port is richer, sweeter, and sits around 18–20% alcohol instead of your standard wine percentage.

But here’s the part most people don’t know 👇

Port was originally fortified for a practical reason, to help the wine survive long sea voyages from Portugal back in the 17th century. The added spirit helped preserve the wine before refrigeration existed.

And that’s also why Port lasts way longer once opened.

A normal bottle of wine?

Open it and the clock starts ticking pretty quickly.

Port?

Because it’s fortified and already more stable, you can pour a glass, pop the cap back on, and come back to it later without panic-drinking the whole bottle. (Responsible AND convenient.)

Basically:

Wine = “drink me tonight.”

Port = “I’ll still be here next week.” 😉

Happy National Wine Day đŸ·

Not just an excuse to open a bottle (although
 we’ll take that too).

It’s a day that’s been around since the early 2000s, created to celebrate wine - but more importantly, the people and process behind it.

Wine doesn’t just appear on shelves, it starts in the vineyard.

It takes seasons, patience, good timing (and a bit of luck).

It’s early mornings, long days, sticky hands, and a whole lot of care.

Around these parts, it’s not just a drink, it’s a craft.

So today we’re appreciating the growers, the makers, and everyone who brings wine to life.
