Does the way cattle are raised have an impact on the meat we eat?

This year sent a sample of our beef away for analysis. Our cattle eat only grass and hay. We don’t use any winter crops, silage or baleage. Our pastures contain a diverse range of plants and we don’t use pesticides, insecticides or synthetic nitrogen fertiliser.

We decided to test the ratio of Omega 3 (think “good fats”) to Omega 6 fats (think less desirable fats) in the beef. Overseas studies suggest grain fed beef can often have an Omega 3:6 ratio of 1:10 or higher, whereas grass fed beef is commonly somewhere between 1:2 and 1:4.

Our beef’s ratio was almost 1:1 (it was actually 1:1.05. Last year’s sample was 1:1.17).

There’s still plenty we don’t know, but as growers these results are very satisfying because they suggest the way we farm may be reflected in the food we produce.

Good morning, a great day ahead. It’s Friday after all.

Happy Mother’s Day tomorrow to all the farming mums out there. Our cake (made by for us) arrived yesterday. As we eat it we will think of all the mums out there, who make everything happen (…well almost everything).

Here is Tegan, our resident soil scientist, checking in on the health of our pastures. In Spring and Autumn we test the Brix (a measure of energy) in our pastures with a refractometer. We monitor the Brix levels over time to see what is happening.

Here are our little spinach, kale and celery plants in the greenhouse. To give them a warm boost and protect them from the wretched slugs we surround them with a wool fleece blanket.

The Upsidedown…. Not really, just the Bendigo Range reflecting in our dam this morning.
