This March the 4th we are inviting you beyond the farm gate and want to shine some light on what’s behind the Bulls and where they come from.
Each June we all spend a lot of time getting to know the sire groups of the sale bulls but not many of us get the chance to see what the female siblings are like;
How much do they put into their calf? What size are they? How much condition do they carry compared to the rest? Are they quiet, are they sound? What are the udders like? Do I want cows like that? What does it mean to be a daughter of “Hooligan or Rome or Sniper? Is that what my herd needs?
We will be splitting the first calvers into sire lines as they are such a great group to compare.
The First calvers are a great group to analyse as they are;
- one contemporary group,
- nutritionally challenged (you can’t feed them fully)
- large group (80),
- they are what we have been working on and represent our direction.
This is also an opportunity to show you what our property looks like and what we are trying to achieve. We have good vehicle access out to our main yards where the first calvers will be on display (8kms past the house) and a laned loop passed the yards through a big chunk of our place. We have been developing through a mix of cultivation and spray, burn, oversowing. So if you just want to come for a a drive and see some new country and cattle, everyone is welcome.
We will run the day the same as the bullwalk , where you come in your own time and spend as much time as you like. I will be stationed out at the heifers to catch up and show you around. Sarah will meet you in the front at the bull shed for a cuppa and give you the info you need.
We understand this is not for everyone and it’s always hard to get away. We tried to pick a time of year where the work settles and also a good to time look at cows with calves at side. There will be more info to come on the day and a booklet explaining the colour coded tagging system for the bloodlines of the heifers.
This is something I would love to be able to do before buying a stud bull. The program is the most important factor when selecting genetics.
Nature is the ultimate drafting gate.
In my experience, a mediocre bull from a rocksolid program with challenge and integrity will out breed a star from a program with no pressure or sort.
