We’ll have to say the apprentice just about got fired today!
We were working on what had been the main perennial bed and I was wondering what a plant was (this happens surprisingly often) and I kid you not he said with a big smile on his face “ you could always refer to your planting plan!” Now for context a planting plan is what most flower farmers have bar me, it is most probably very helpful. However, I seem to have an inability to write or follow a planting plan I like the surprises I find , the plants I have snuck into a little gap and forgotten about to it’s their time to shine again. A little chaos is good and details have never been my friends.
If you are still reading you are most probably wondering how this relates to the upcoming plant stall? Well if I had a planting plan I would most probably of known the sequence of colours of alstroemeria in my garden with out one I am 99% sure but that 1% doubt means all alstroemeria at the plant sale will be labeled mystery colour! But I can assure you I chose the colours carefully when I purchased them, so all will be beautiful and they are such a work horse in the garden and as a cut flower and a wee tip if you pull the flowers from the base not cut them it keeps the plant under control.

So today I potted up loads of Chrysanthemum cuttings that I had in water and they rooted beautifully. It always amazes me one small stem at this time of the year by Autumn can provide many beautiful stems of flowers, if looked after properly and cut back two or three times before January.
At this stage I hope to have 8-10 different colours and styles of Chrysanthemum on my stall on the 26th September.
They really are the stars the autumnal garden and bouquets. Though I do have a couple of special ones that are more summer flowering so will see if I can divide a few up.

I just made my annual plant sale event live. This will be my tenth year of holding it and my has it grown and morphed in that time. Starting as a two little tables at the local church fair, to now being held on my property. For far to much work trying to get all the plants down to the church!

Two months ago I really didn’t know if it would be going ahead this year thanks to a very human F…. UP!
I, as I do each year bought a ton bag of certified organic mix and after five weeks I knew something wasn’t right for my seedlings were not thriving. A bit of detective work lead to the answer. The company had not mixed in the mineral! So that meant the 700 seedlings I had started basically withered and died. At this stage there has been no apology from the company even though they provided me with the minerals and know the cost to me of their mistake.

Yep there was tears, this gig is hard enough with out humans making it harder and I honestly thought on more than one day of chucking it all
in and retiring to a postage size section covered in artificial turf in the middle of a big city! But then I got over myself and pulled out my seed box and started again.

So not promising any one tomatoes on the first of December this year but I am promising the normal eclectic mix of plants and many seed lines you will not find anywhere else. Like yellow passion fruit seedlings grown after tasting the best passion fruit ever at the Heritage Food Centre in Whanganui. I made my friend spit out all the pips so I could grow them lol . Tomato varieties I have bred myself. Cut flower seedlings from commercial seed lines general public can’t buy.

So make sure you come along and I will spend the next three weeks telling you more about what will be available.

Welcome to my favourite day of the year!
The 1st of September and the first day of Spring.
Yes I know many think spring starts the day after the equinox but not I! Because the thought of making winter last longer is just not something I can cope with lol.
So my life is full on seed planting, as always trying to push a few boundaries. Like when I was planting my zinnias in the last days of winter and it says on the packet not to plant them too early in spring . So technically I was following the rules🤣 wasn’t I?
But I do have space in my very heat controlled lounge to look after them and a very tolerant husband.
So heres to a wonderful flower season to us all.

PS this is just a small sample of my seed box not quite ready to show the extent of my addiction!

First tulips of the season. I utterly love the mellowness of this one, off to be placed on my Grandads grave. 34 years ago he died just as the big snow hit. Let’s hope this weather event isn’t that big!

What a week!
Sometimes life just throws curveballs and this week they seemed to be hitting from multiple directions!
And some where in the middle of all that I had the joy of doing flowers for an elopement. I just love that a bride wanted to embrace seasonal flowers for her wedding bouquets and beautiful dried for her daughter’s flower crowns. Her colour palette was forest green, brown and ivory. With a little outside the square thinking I really enjoyed putting this together.
What ever the season as long as your embrace it, beauty in nature can be found.
