🌱 Herb of the Week 🌱

SWEET VIOLET (Viola odorata)

A hardy ground cover with beautiful sweetly scented violet coloured blooms in autumn & spring. Its 'seductive' scent lead this humble little flower to become the plant of Venus and Aphrodite (Goddesses of love) with the ancient Greeks adopting violets as their symbol for fertility.
Flowers and leaves were once used to make a tasty cough syrup and sore throat gargle. Due to being slightly sedating it is suggested as a tea (fresh or dried flowers ) for those suffering from anxiety, insomnia and/or blood pressure issues whereas dried violet leaf and/or root tea is said to alleviate catarrh and bronchitis.
A poultice of fresh leaves is said to help relieve bruising.
Aromatherapy wise violets are often described as having a soporific effect - reflecting the effect of drinking violet tea.
Violet flowers can be eaten candied, or raw in salads or floated on soups (NB: a quick way to make candied violets is to brush fresh flowers with egg white and sprinkle with granulated sugar and air dry).
A creeping rhizome that prefers summer shade (ideal under deciduous trees or sited for early morning sun only). Organic enriched moist soils for best results. Perennial. Ht 10cm.
NB: Do not take large amounts of the leaves as they may cause vomiting or diarrhea.

🫜🌱Plant of the Week🌱🫜

RAT-TAIL RADISH (Raphanus sativus var. Caudatus)

Most radishes are thought to be small, cylindrical, pink or white, root vegetables however the unique, heirloom rat-tail radish is grown for its crispy, mildly peppery flavored seed pods that form after it flowers.
This ancient radish plant still belongs to the Brassicaceae (think cabbage, broccoli etc) family but they do not produce the bulbous underground roots like modern radish cultivars, instead after flowering the plant produce hundreds of long, tapering seed pods, up to 15cm long forming after the flowers at the top of the plant.
Rat-tail are indigenous to the Southern areas of Asia and are a versatile plant - their adaptability has allowed them to be enjoyed in regions from the tropics all the way to the temperate areas of the world!
When eaten fresh the pods are crisp and crunchy. The young pods are tender and can be eaten fresh (eg in salads) whereas older pods develop a more fibrous, chewy nature (a bit like older radish bulbs!) and are best cooked - steamed like beans or in stirfry.
Rat-tail radishes contain a milder, peppery flavor compared to underground radish bulbs and have a delicate pungency mixed with a subtle spiciness. With the rats-tail you can
in addition to eating the pods, eat the pink/white flowers (but then get no pods!) and/or eat the young leaves.
Easy to grow and abundantly productive this interesting, hardy vegetable plant is ideal winter or summer. Full sun in good garden soil or large pot. Ht 60-80cm

πŸ₯— SALAD HERBS FOR WINTER πŸ₯—
When the days are cold and damp, the idea of sitting by a fire with collection of seed catalogs seems more appealing than being outside in the garden but even during these winter months there are a few 'hardy' salad (or soups or casserole) herbs that make the occasional foray outside worthwhile!
For various perennial and annual salads herbs check out them out at the Otago Farmers Market this coming Saturday - in most cases these plants actually perform better in winter when the temperature remains more stable reducing the occurrence of bolting!

SORREL: A leafy green whose young leaves are great for salads with a mild lemony flavor while older leaves are best cooked. Grows the whole year around. Perennial.
CRESS 'AMERICAN UPLAND': Similar to watercress in taste - without the need to be grown in water! Annual.
ARUGULA or ROCKET: A peppery tasting salad green - ideal in salads and on freshly cooked pizzas or pasta. Annual.
RATS-TAIL RADISH: A delightful heirloom vegetable. It is the seed pods that one harvests and they can be eaten raw (taste like radishes!) or steamed/stir-fries like beans. Annual.
MINUTINA: A leafy green who's winter leaves are an ideal additions to stir-fries, salads and sandwiches/wraps. A beautiful lush green mound in the garden - prefers the drier sites. Perennial.
CHICORY: This one is more similar to a cos lettuce with leaves having a bitter bite. Pick leaves as desired. Roots can be used for coffee substitute. Annual.
MINERS LETTUCE: Grows brilliantly during our cooler winters (and in summer) - and doesn't get tough when in flower! The stems can have a 'pea-shoot' like texture when long. Annual.
PARSLEY (curly or Italian): Hardy, fresh, a staple for kitchen. Biennial.
CORIANDER: One of the "love it or hate it" herbs, ideal growing conditions here in Dunedin during winter - even outside! Annual.
PARCEL: With a flavor combination of parsely and celery this is an ideal herb to have anytime of the year. Stems can be used as a celery substitute in any recipe and leaves can also be added to stocks, soups, casseroles and salads. Biennial.
